Many thanks, Jeanne. Got quite a lot of reading done this weekend. We had a long drive down to Southampton (5-6 hours each way) for a couple of birthday parties, plus a couple of quiet evenings in with our friends. The menfolk were playing cribbage (they always have a tournament when we get together), I was reading and our other friend was either reading or doing puzzles from her newspaper.

Now THAT is a fun weekend. I was snowed in and read.

Thank goodness we haven’t got any of the white stuff. We’ve got high winds and rain: one storm just gone and another on its way. I’m working in the city of York on Wednesday and they’re expecting another flood along the river. I have to cross that river, so it’ll be interesting to see how high it is. Interesting for me but I guess not so much for the local residents and businesses.

Oh, Anji. I've driven over a bridge where the water was nearly touching the bottom. I did not like the feeling, nor did I like seeing all that water.

When we lived in Kansas, we were driving at night and suddenly found ourselves in the water before we realized what happened. Within a few minutes we were on higher ground but it scared the crap out of us. We had to sit there until daylight so we could see what was going on.

A big semi-truck passed us and decided he was going to take a chance and cross the flooded road. We watched in horror as the water pushed his truck off the road and it landed on its side in the ditch. The driver then climbed out the door and stood on the side of his truck. That was one night I'll never forget. Rushing water is stronger than you realize.

That sounds like a frightening experience. On Boxing Day in 2015, I had a similar one. I’d worked for four hours in the morning and the journey there had taken a lot longer than usual due to flooding but coming home was even worse. A 35 minute drive took two hours as I had to divert around some of the rivers of the Yorkshire Dales. It was a question of finding bridges that were high enough above the water that the police hadn’t closed them. I was surprised that my final bridge was still open, as the river was flowing either side of it and the road on the far side was under water. Traffic was managing to get through it, though. The main problem was drivers coming the other way in their SUVs and just gunning their way through far too fast and throwing up quite a bow wave. No consideration for those of us in cars that weren’t nearly so high off the road.

Fortunately, when I go to York tomorrow, I’ll be travelling by train and crossing the river on foot. The footbridge is quite high above the river, so crossing it shouldn’t be a problem 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻
