Besides humans, there are three types of creatures in the world of All Souls: witches, vampires, and daemons. Each creature has different powers. If you could choose, which type of creature would you like to be and why?

The elemental pull draws me to saying witch. However, being immortal and living many different lives seems appealing.

Tonight, I'll say daemon, but that's subject to change.

Lisa, I'm with you. No housework is pretty irresistible. Of course, vampires don't have to clean up the kitchen and daemons probably don't notice a mess! It's a real testament to Deb's talents that her creatures are so distinct and appealing.

It's true, Eliza! Why are all the best ones vampires?

So far we are eleven witches, five vampires, and four daemons. Certainly enough to cause the humans to notice us if we were to all gather together. Besides Diana and Matthew, is there a particular creature who speaks to you? I definitely have a soft spot for Hamish!

I know he's not in ADoW, but Gallowglass, definitely.
It looks like Gallowglass gives Matthew a run for the money in terms of being the most alluring vampire of the series. First-time readers will have to wait until the next book to meet him, but it will certainly be worth the wait!

Anyone else struck by the curious name "Amen Corner"? I've certainly wondered about it. Now, here's a piece in today's New York Times!

It's fun to uncover something like this--and impressive to think about the variety of places where Deb finds inspiration!

Now it would be one thing to be a vampire, but if you were a warmblood--be it human, witch, or daemon--and fell in love with a vampire, would you want to become a vampire yourself or would you prefer to lead a mortal life and enjoy what time you had together?

I would want to definitely be sure it was true love before committing to eternity. If so, I think becoming a vampire would be the way I would go. It's not like they are monsters (most of them anyway!) I think of all the good things that could be done if you had no limit to your lifetime. It is interesting that there is no mention of witches or daemons being turned into vampires. I wonder what happens to their abilities if they are turned?

I'm going to go back and look, but I believe there's a very slight reference to this in ADoW. Before she was turned, Ysabeau had some abilities that may have been magical in nature and was regretful because they disappeared after the became a vampire. Anyone else remember this?

Thanks, Melissa! The risk of losing one's original powers seems to be part of the gamble.

Yes, Ysabeau had visions. But they don't know for sure if D would lose her abilities, given her unusual genetic makeup. Even if she would lose some or all of her abilities, I think it would be worth it to be with the love of her life forever. Maybe she could wait until she was a little older. (Is that what happened to Marthe?? Why was she so old when turned? How did she know how to help Ysabeau with the visions?)So many questions!!
Eliza wrote: "This is something I want to ask Deb about at the book tour. Like at the end of the last book...what does Diana's future look like? Morality/immortality wise. Also there was a disclaimer about spoil..."
I wouldn't worry too much, Eliza. We don't want to give away too much, but it is a re-read. I think the fact that some of the group have read the series four or five times proves that the storyline is compelling even when you know exactly what's going to happen!

It seems the main reason Matthew wouldn't be inclined to let her be turned was that it would change her from what he loved. It seems pretty strange. I mean I guess we don't know what most of the other vampires were like before being turned. They only really talk about Matthew and Marcus as humans and they both turned out great. Sure Matthew's gotta deal with blood rage, but he has done a great job of getting a handle on it, only a few of his family members even knew he had it. Marcus is awesome! I know Matthew would never make Diana a vampire himself because of the risk of blood rage, but I can't figure out why he wouldn't want to have her forever.
