This is clearly a young adult novel and the start of a continuing young adult series. I am definitely not a young adult which might account for my lukewarm appreciation of this book.

The Invisible Library exists in a literary multiverse. Its unseen presence is a portal to any world imagined in literature. As far as I could understand it, the library functions as a depository for all books from all worlds. However, there is much mystery about the Library. Apparently, there are some cutthroat politics with top secret intrigue that are beyond the job description of Irene, one of the library’s more low level spies. The story is filled with non-stop action. Irene and her unusual apprentice (view spoiler)) are under constant attack by a variety of paranormal creatures and steampunk devices. If this book were a movie, the special effects would be spectacular and loud.

I did appreciate the creativity and the flashes of humor in this story. If I had reason to take a long drive with a 13 year old, I’d give this audiobook a try for mutual listening. For myself, I’d prefer a quieter, more literary book about books like The Thirteenth Tale or The Book Thief.
