I picked this up because I wanted a lighter, fun fantasy, and I would say it succeeds there. It ended up being a little too lightweight for me, ultimately, but I can see why it's popular if this is what you like reading, which is essentially a longform narrative of a DnD campaign with old friends you haven't seen in a while. It's a good time, but there's nothing below the surface.
The MC was the only reason I stuck with it. I enjoyed his personality, as I should since once you take away the violence he's basically my husband :) Lots of thoughts going on under the surface, but not many that are actually said out loud. A lot of the humor hinges on this personality trait, which again, I married on purpose so I'd certainly hope it works for me!
I had a hard time staying invested during the initial "getting the band back together" one character at a time portion of the story, which dragged on much too long for my taste. It did pick up once the action started, but the whole thing is too long for what you get out of it.
