Welcome to the System Collapse Buddy Read Discussion thread! This thread officially opens on December 14th and anyone can join at any time. Please keep in mind that spoilers are allowed in this thread but only up to the group's current reading place. Do not spoil the book if you've read further than the group. Any extra days can be used to catch up!

Each day we will be reading by chapters or page numbers. Page numbers are an approximation based on the hardcover or paperback that is the default on Goodreads. The suggested Buddy Read discussion schedule is as follows:

Dec 15: Chapters 4-6
Dec 16: Chapters 7-9

Dia | 386 comments Did you see they're going to make a murderbot series?? I'm excited about it but also think it'll fall short.

LiteraryCryptid | 217 comments Just saw the announcement. I'm not sure how I feel about it - excited that more people will get the chance to experience Murderbot, but also worried that it's not going to live up to the books. . . I guess it will have to be a wait and see

Jen K | 1547 comments I had no idea and not sure how I feel about turning this into a show. Agree that it COULD be amazing but fear them messing it up.

I've read through chapter 7 and for the first time in the series, felt a bit behind by not re-reading #6. It is taking a bit to remember where we left off. It is also odd to see Murderbot not feeling as sure and clearcut as usual with the human parts causing hesitation and the "redacted" episode. It is hard to put down as usual.

Dia | 386 comments I have been putting reading this off because I know I'd devour it in a day and I don't want it to end hahha

from the blurb I think it is more of a continuation of #5? but I might feel the same way as you as I read the previous books all at once so didn't have to try and recall too much

Jen K | 1547 comments It could be a continuation of #5? I half remember the references but it is still so good!!!

LiteraryCryptid | 217 comments Definitely a continuation of book #5 (I'm favouring a reading order of 1-4, 6, 5, 7 for timeline purposes)

I'm a bit behind right now, halfway through chapter 4 - I'm finding Murderbot is expressing a lot more human emotion as Jen K mentioned. Curious if this is because the programed versions have been so drastically effected by the virus attack and when Murderbot separated themself to fight it - not to mention the now 2(?) other times they have had critical failures due to trauma/significant injury. . . Maybe the human aspect is overtaking/overriding the programed portion of Murderbot.

Perhaps the "redacted" is a form/symbol of ptsd or repression since Murderbot hasn't come to terms/worked through the events that technically killed a part of them.

LiteraryCryptid | 217 comments Okay, I finally finished last night!
Murderbot is so much more human in this novel than in the past - in terms of referencing their organic parts, and the reactions they have to events. The depiction of PTSD through the 'redacted' event was brilliantly done, and highlights the ignored trauma that Murderbot has been living with (especially since these events would be normally scrubbed from their memory).

ART will always be my favourite companion for Murderbot. The banter between the two, and the way ART supports Murderbot is absolutely adorable to read. Plus the way they understand their reasoning without communication just makes them sound like an old married couple.
