Wheel of History
Duration: January 1, 2024 - December 31, 2024

Based on the popular television game show "Wheel of Fortune", in this challenge participants will spin the wheel of history and read a book that fits the category spun.

GENERAL RULES:
Participants may join at any time during the challenge.

Please note the change to rule #1. The book must be set 65 years in the past and not 50 as in previous yearly challenges - yes, we are all getting older 😉

1) Definition of historical mystery for this challenge: Any book whose central plot involves a crime of any type (murder, robbery, fraud, etc.) and takes place at any point that is at least 65 years in the past. This includes works set in a time period that is historical from the author’s perspective (for example, The Cadfael Chronicles by Ellis Peters) as well as books written in the past from our perspective and set during the author’s lifetime (for example, Hercule Poirot by Agatha Christie).
*** Please note: A thriller focusing on espionage does not work for the challenge. A historical mystery must contain a crime that is investigated.
2) Setting is determined as 50% of the book taking place in the required time or place.
3) Categories can be completed in any order
4) Re-reads and audiobooks are acceptable
5) All books begun on January 1st count toward the challenge
6) Create a personal thread in the challenge folder to keep track of your spins and books. Please make a new post for every task that contains:
A. The wedge spun
B. The book to be read.
C. Once you have finished the book, create a new post with all the details above AND the date read. You can also add a few comments about the book if you want (this is not compulsory).

7) The goal is to read books from all of the wedges.
8) You cannot spin the wheel in advance. You must complete the book for the current spin before spinning again.
8) If you spin the wheel and land on a wedge that you have already completed, you have to read another book from the same wedge. You cannot spin the wheel again to get a different wedge (this is limited to two edges. If you land on the wedge again, you can re-spin).

The Wheel:
The wheel contains 24 wedges.
20 are connected to a specific Goodreads shelf or list related to historical mysteries. Feel free to add books to the various shelves and lists.
2 Bonus read - read any historical mystery of your choice
2 Lose a turn - ask a member of the group to choose a historical mystery for you to read.

I was in the process of editing the list. It should be there now.

I see it. Thank you. Though, wouldn't it be 2024 rather than 2014? Or is it a ten year milestone celebration that I'm not aware of? (I'm new to this group.)

Welcome to the group.
2023 and 2024 are together in wedge #18

2014 is alone because there is no list on Goodreads for 2013. All subsequent yearly lists are paired. This allows the members a larger selection to choose from when they land on these wedges.

No worries! All questions are welcome.

J.Roberts | 49 comments Hello again, I was wondering; on the subject of Great War veterans as Detectives, can I read a book where the detective hasn't served in the Great War yet but will (as a spy) further down the series (I'm thinking of the Fandorin series by Boris Akunin, specifically)?
Thank you!

Hi Robert
You must read a book that is on the associated list. The links to the lists are next to the wedges in the 3rd message of this thread.

You can add a book to the list but it must meet the criteria. In this case, it must be a veteran of the Great War. So it cannot be a detective who has not yet served.

Michaela | 69 comments I´m a bit late with this, because I´m still thinking whether I´ll make the challenge. Is it true that we have to do all the wedges? It looks like fun, but I can hardly imagine reading 24 historical mysteries in addition to all my other books from different genres.

Not at all. Completing the challenge is not a requirement for participating. You can still participate and do as many or as few wedges as you like. The purpose is to have fun and broaden reading horizons. Not pressure involved.

Yes I don't think I could complete the challenge either but I may try to do as many as I can. I have to take the time to set it up and spin the wheel. I have a long TBR list! Still catching up from Christmastime when I was too busy and tired to read.

I can relate! Was wondering if you´d be accepting the challenge. :)

Michaela | 69 comments In the rules it says that you have to do a wedge again if you land on the same one when spinning the wheel. I had the same wedge three times, so wonder what I do when it turns out the same again next time? Or is it only that you have to do it twice? Wonder that nobody had the problem before...

I think twice should be enough. You can spin again.

Interestingly, that didn't come up the first time we did the challenge.

Michaela | 69 comments Thanks Lauren! Glad I got another one this time, but good to know it´s only twice. :)

I just checked and it's working for me.
Perhaps clear the cache on your computer. Sometimes that can interfere with it.
