Edwina Book Anaconda | 260 comments Let's get serious about series in 2024!

Your mission, should you choose to accept, is to read at least one book per month from the list below. (You do not have to read 1 book per list item, just one book from the choices below.)

Book and sequel (already read the book, then just read the sequel.)

Complete a trilogy. (You can read all 3 in a month or read 1 per month.)

The next book in a series you are currently reading.

Start a new series consisting of 4 or more books.

Remember, this challenge runs from Jan. 1, 2024 - Dec. 31, 2024.
Gather your books now, if you'd like, but don't start reading them yet.

Bookguide | 46 comments Another great challenge! I’ve never got beyond the first book of Cornelia Funke’s Inkheart series or Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials. I’ve only read the first two of Ali Smith’s 5 seasons books. I’ve haven’t read the last two or three of the Harry Potter books, though I’ve watched the films. We also have multiple Terry Pratchetts TBR, and I have the Dune trilogy. Plenty of choice! Trouble is, I’m not going to be passing any of these on, so it won’t make my shelves any emptier. Never mind, we’ll see how it goes.
ETA: an autobiographical trilogy by Tove Ditlevsen that I can borrow from the library. ETA2: Janet Evanovich series, Hunger Games trilogy.

January:
READ: Three to Get Deadly by Janet Evanovich. https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
READ: Hot Six by Janet Evanovich. https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
READ: The Subtle Knife by Philip Pullman. https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
February:
The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami, originally published in three parts:
- READ: Book 1: The Thieving Magpie, June and July 1984
- READ: Book 2: Bird as Prophet, July to October 1984
- READ: Book 3: The Birdcatcher, October 1984 to December 1985
March:
READ: Blue Genes (Kate Brannigan #5) by Val McDermid
READ: The Green Mile by Stephen King (originally published in instalments)
READ: Murder at Monticello (Mrs Murphy #3) by Rita Mae Brown
April:
READ: Sunset House: More Perfume From Provence by Winifred Fortescue, a sequel to Perfume from Provence, which I haven’t read. I do have another of her memoirs/collections of anecdotes TBR at some point.
READ: The D.A. Calls It Murder (Doug Selby #1) by Erle Stanley Gardner
July:
READ: The Elegance of the Hedgehog (7 rue de Grenelle #2) by Muriel Barbery. Only very vague links between this and part 1, which I haven’t read.
August:
READ: A Visit from the Goon Squad (Goon Squad #1) by Jennifer Egan. The sequel The Candy House is also on my TBR.
READ: A Death in Summer (Quirke #4) by Benjamin Black. I read #1 a few years ago.
September:
CURRENTLY READING: Cruel and Unusual (Kay Scarpetta #4) by Patricia Cornwell. A series I dip into when they find me. I’m looking forward to the next one, The Body Farm, which has been on my shelf since 2009, released, replaced and picked up again. I now have 3 copies on my BC shelf, none of which is the copy I’m reading now. Very peculiar!

Nancy Brady (minesayn) | 162 comments Edwina, how many books in a series can be read and counted? As many as I want or only one book per month?

To successfully complete the challenge, you need to read at least one book per month. Anything beyond that is completely up to you.
My "big goal" is to finish the Alex Cross series. I have 16 books left to read in it, but I will probably toss in a sequel or two and a trilogy just to avoid book burnout. (Alex Cross overdose.)

Thanks, Edwina. I want to finish the In Death series. That's why I asked.

I’ve just updated my list. I seem to only be semi-serious as I skip around series, depending on what turns up at BC meetings. Also, I’ve read more than one a month, but didn’t read any series in May and June. Whoops!

message 12: by Edwina (new)

Edwina Book Anaconda | 260 comments I'm really enjoying getting some of these series books read.
In fact, I'm liking it so much that I think we should do it again next year.
Any interest?

Edwina Book Anaconda | 260 comments Congratulations to all who finished this challenge!
And even if you didn't complete it, I hope you had fun, and it inspired you to (maybe) read some books that you wouldn't have read otherwise.
The whole point of my challenges is to "get 'em read and get 'em moving" so Well Done to ALL of you who played in the stacks with me.
