Annalisa | 1659 comments Hello Team Count Adhemar's Bourbon Lancer! Welcome I can't wait to get to know you all and to play some UNO.

Please introduce your self in your first post. Let us know if this is your first time playing UNO or if you have played before, where you are from, and what you genres you enjoy reading. You can also post a few favorite reads and if you feel like it the worst book you read last year. (I always find it really interesting to see what people hate.) Also, somewhere in that post please post a link to your Uno shelf.

I’m going to be sending out friend requests to all of you. Please accept those. It makes it a lot easier for me to check your books throughout the month. You may also want to send friend requests to the rest of the team as it will make it much easier to find reverse cards.

I'm so excited to for UNO to start and to get to know you all more. I'm Annalisa and this is my 8th year playing and my 4th year as a captain. Please feel free to ask any questions you have as I remember my first year was a little confusing.

I’m from the mountains of Western North Carolina in the US.

I enjoy reading historical romance scifi romance, fantasy romance, fantasy, and science fiction. I’m pretty much willing to read any genre although I’m not much for horror.

Some of my favorite recent reads coincidentally from this year:
Nettle & Bone by T. Kingfisher I was surprised at how much I liked this but I think that was largely because of the horror tag. This was not in my mind horror. It was more of a fairytale with characters that felt real and had fears. It was refreshing.
The Tainted Cup (Shadow of the Leviathan, #1) by Robert Jackson Bennett I just recently finished this and I had no idea I would enjoy a fantasy mystery, but it was just what I was looking for. This is a world that could easily kill you by breathing in at the wrong time. The setting was fantastic and the characters were such an interesting mix of likeable and not.

My least favorite books from 2023:
The Dangerous Harem (Dino Island, #3) by J.R. Hogan This was a book I read for a BOM challenge and I still really want to know if a T-Rex can't back up.
Verity by Colleen Hoover As a non challenge related book I really didn't like Verity. I knew going in that there was about a 80% chance I'd dislike it. It gave me Jane Erye vibes and as such was predictable.

Suzanne | 2453 comments Hi Team! I'm so glad to get to play Uno with all of you! It was my "gateway" challenge several years ago, and I am always excited to play.

My name is Suzanne and I'm from eastern Idaho. It's cold and snowy here right now, but from looking at the weather, I believe that is pretty true of everywhere in the US at the moment.

I like most genres, and will read whatever I'm in the mood for. My favorites of the past few months:

The Tainted Cup (Shadow of the Leviathan, #1) by Robert Jackson Bennett I am tickled that Annalisa also listed this one. It was a good mystery AND a good fantasy, and I was engrossed from start to finish. And I loved the world!

Charm City Rocks by Matthew Norman from November. Romance with older adults (40s I think) and I just enjoyed it - I don't usually rate romance as highly as I did this one.

My favorite book of last year was probably Where'd You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple - perhaps because I know my daughter-in-law related to it, and I just thought it was funny and interesting. But a close runner up was The Will of the Many (Hierarchy, #1) by James Islington , and I'm interested to see where that series will go!

I didn't finish any stinkers, but that's because I've stopped reading books I dislike. :)

My Uno shelf is https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

Heather Moore | 405 comments Hi everyone! My name is Heather. I am from Arkansas. This is my fifth year playing Uno.

I read a lot of good books last year, so I don't know if I can pick any favorites, but I definitely have a least favorite:
The Frog Who Croaked (Platypus Police Squad, #1) by Jarrett J. Krosoczka I read it for UNO (the things you will read for a mini challenge, lol.)

I like most genres, but fiction and historical fiction are my favorites.

Catsalive | 153 comments G'day, I'm Kylie from Sydney, Australia. This is my 2nd year of Uno, I enjoyed it last year & have no doubt I will this year too.

I read all sorts of genres, although the fictional criminal classes are my favourites, except romantic suspense, unless it's Mary Stewart, & I love a good Fantasy series. I do not like True Crime or Horror, & I'm not keen on Romance unless it's historical or humorous.

I'm enjoying a lot of the books with older MCs that are being released, mystery & contemporary. I just finished Mrs Winterbottom Takes a Gap Year by Joanna Nell which is a lovely tale. I know, I know, I should have held onto it for the yellow cover, but it was a Christmas present & has been burning a hole in Mt. TBR.

Suzanne, I've been seeing The Will of the Many all over recently and it looks really good. I have a hold on it at my library, but it says "several months" so I might be waiting a while.

Alla (allaskarp) | 364 comments Hi all!
I´m Alla, from Iceland and I think this is my 4th time playing. Took a break last year because of a hectic personal life at the time, but back in it now :)

My favorite genre are probably romance, historical romance, paranormal romance, fantasy and fiction (a little murder mystery is always fun to read).

My favorite books that I´ve read recently is the Sunshine Vicram series, by Darynda Jones. Loved it!
A Bad Day for Sunshine (Sunshine Vicram, #1) by Darynda Jones A Good Day for Chardonnay (Sunshine Vicram, #2) by Darynda Jones A Hard Day for a Hangover (Sunshine Vicram, #3) by Darynda Jones

My least favorite one was for sure Hey, Mister Marshall (St. Mary's Rebels #4) by Saffron A. Kent - so disappointed with that one :(

Looking forward to playing with you :D

Suzanne | 2453 comments It was fun to wake up to some team posts!

Heather, the worst books I've read have been for challenges. The things we do....

Catsalive - I put that Mrs. WInterbottom book on my TBR - I really like the idea of that one (and even the title). Thanks for the suggestion!

Alla, I love Sunshine Vicram too - it's funny but also good mysteries. I keep hoping there will be another :)

I hoped so too, but I think I read somewhere that there won´t be more, unfortunately :(

I´m planning on reading the Throne of glass series in the coming weeks. I did start it a couple of years ago, then after book 3 I got sidetracked by other challenges I was in at the time and they never fit in that for me so I dropped it. Now I´m planning on beginning again from the start, so I should be able to cover some colors with those books :)

message 22: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 2453 comments I got stuck on that series too - I'll be interested to see how it goes for you, and probably inspired to pick it up again!

message 23: by Louise (new)

Louise | 1282 comments Hi All,

I’m Louise from South Wales and this is one of my favorite team challenges. I’ve taken a step back from captaining this year . RL really messed up my reading the latter half of last year and left me nearing challenge burnout

I enjoy reading most genres, not sci-fi or horror though and have a large library of reading materials to hand.

Annalisa | 1659 comments Welcome Louise and Alla.

It can be nice to step back from being a captain sometimes, Louise.

Alla and Suzanne, I read the Throne of Glass series many years ago. I felt like it got a little slow for a bit but then picked back up again and I thought the last book was one of the strongest in the series. (I'm pretty sure it works for a yellow 7 too.)

❀●○●○Ashley○●○●❀ | 390 comments Hi everyone!

My name is Ashley and this is my fourth year participating in UNO. I'm from the GTA (Greater Toronto Area), Canada. I'm not too picky when it comes to what I read but I do tend to stick to fantasy whether it be a novel or a manga/manhwa (even though those sadly don't count for this challenge).

The last books I read that I really enjoyed were Penpal, The Raven Boys and Wolfsong. I also did read through the entirety of the Throne of Glass series (and all SJM books) as well.

I look forward to playing with all of you!

Here is my UNO shelf - UNO 2024 Reads

Suzanne | 2453 comments I am loving how we have people all over the world on our team!
Ashley I really loved the first Wolfsong book and really need to continue!!
I'm heading for San Diego for the week to spend time with my hubby and enjoy above freezing temperatures! I'll for sure check in this coming week though.

Annalisa | 1659 comments Welcome Ashley and Ashley!

I typically do not use a tracking sheet for Uno as I find the conversation around completed books is fun. If the minis need a tracking sheet we might have one then.

My work is currently a bit chaotic so I’ll be checking in daily to answer questions and chat but I might not be as quick to respond.

I'm really curious about this. I read the Demon Cycle and really loved the series, but for some reason have not started this next series by Peter Brett.

I'm currently trying to read all of the ACRs I have that are published in February. So I'm currently reading The Book of Doors by Gareth Brown . It is really good but a book I prefer to read in small bits. I'm also listening to Heart of the Matter by Emily Giffin , which I'm not really liking all that much. However, it is a listen while doing other things so for that it is alright. I'm guessing it will be a 2 star read if I finish it. I might get annoyed soon and decide I'm done. I'm trying to be better about stopping and not continuing a book if I don't like it.

message 36: by Alla (new)

Alla (allaskarp) | 364 comments I just finished The Invisible Husband of Frick Island by Colleen Oakley which I quite enjoyed and now I´m on to The Greek Escape by Karen Swan ... a summer read at winter! Well it looks to be more of a mystery read than summer read so far.
