For this challenge, choose one of the U.S. states (home state, place you'd like to visit, etc) and record the books you read set in that state. For an added bonus, add a bullet list or brief summary of new things learned about the state from your reading.

Who's in for making a STATEment?

message 2: by Lauri (new)

Lauri Gentry | 442 comments Hmmm... I think I might try this one. Not sure which STATE I will choose. I think most books I read take place in just a few states.

message 3: by Katrina (last edited Mar 18, 2024 11:20AM) (new)

Katrina Lybbert | 886 comments I will do this one! I am going to choose the state of Rhode Island.

1. Blizzard by John Rocco Blizzard by John Rocco (March 18, 2024)
~ In 1978 they had a blizzard in New England. Rhode Island had over 4 feet of snow and it took over a week to get the snow plows through to everyone.

Karen | 1316 comments I'll give this a try! Not sure which STATE I will choose. Common states for most of my reads are Alaska, Maine, North Carolina, Florida, Texas, Wyoming, Montana and California.

I am going to choose Maine.

Karen wrote: "Question - Can we pick more than one state?"

The idea to select just one state for a singular focus. It's ok if the volume for this challenge is low. The result will hopefully be that you are able to learn some new things about your selected state. Having just one makes this an easy challenge to remember. Best wishes selecting your state!

My state will be Missouri. Look forward to what the year will bring!

#1 The Divine Proverb of Streusel by Sara Brunsvold
Primarily set in a small town near Hannibal. I visited there several years ago to see Mark Twain's home town. It was great to be somewhat familiar with the area. I learned from the pages that there is a Christian publisher in St Louis: Concordia (Lutheran Church Missouri Synod)

#2 Something Shady (Secrets From Grandma’s Attic #11) by Shirley Raye Redmond
This cozy mystery takes place in Canton, which is the northeastern part of Missouri.

#3 Bending Toward the Sun (Quilted Hearts, #2) by Mona Hodgson
This historical romance novella is set in Saint Charles, which is a suburb of St Louis. I have an aunt and uncle that live there and this is where my dad's assisted living facility was located. It's where I last saw him and where he passed away in December of 2022. The author mention's in her note a historical downtown. I'd like to visit this area in the future.

#4 Duel Threat (Secrets From Grandma’s Attic #12) by Gabrielle Meyer
This cozy mystery takes place in Canton, which is the northeastern part of Missouri. I learned about a duel which happened between two lawyers. History about Missouri I had no idea about. The men participated in a duel twice with the second time leading to one of the men's death. The other went on to become a senator.

#5 A Royal Tea (Secrets From Grandma’s Attic #13) by Roseanna M. White Set in Canton, Missouri

#6 Show Me Betrayal (Show Me Mysteries Book 1) by Ellen E. Withers Set in Mexico, Missouri

#7 The Heart Of A Hero (Secrets From Grandma’s Attic #14) by D'Ann Mateer Set in Canton, Missouri

#8 Toward the Dawn (A Western Light, #2) by Mary Connealy About a third of the novel set in Independence, Missouri

I had no idea this novel was partially set in MO when I started reading it. I learned that Washington University (a school I aspired to attend when I was in high school) was previously named Washington Institute. The current name began in 1856.

#9 Ripples Along the Shore (Quilted Hearts, #3) by Mona Hodgson Set in Saint Charles, Missouri

#10 Cobalt Skies (A More Perfect Union #2) by Pegg Thomas First Part is set in Kansas City and then St Joseph, Missouri

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General...
I learned about General Order Eleven issued August 25, 1863 mandating Missourians from select counties evacuate their homes. Wow!

#11 Fractured Beauty (Secrets from Grandma’s Attic #15) by Janice Thompson Set in Canton, Missouri

#12 Saved by the Matchmaker (A Shanahan Match, #2) by Jody Hedlund Set in St Louis

#13 Show Me Deceit (Show Me Mysteries, #2) by Ellen E. Withers Set in Mexico, Missouri

#14 A Shadowy Past (Secrets From Grandma’s Attic #16) by DeAnna Julie Dodson Set in Canton, Missouri

#15 Over the Edge by Irene Hannon Set in St Louis

#16 In Its Time (Secrets From Grandma’s Attic #17) by Beth Adams Set in Canton, Missouri

#17 Nothing Gold Can Stay (Secrets From Grandma’s Attic Book 18) by Becky Melby Set in Canton, Missouri

Thanks for the clarification, Staci! Not sure yet which one I will pick.

Trying to decide whether to do one that we are visiting on this year's big RV trip OR one I've read very little from OR the one state remaining that I haven't been to yet. Like you, looking forward to what the year will bring!
