Dickens and Mesmerism: The Hidden Springs of Fiction by Fred Kaplan - thought-provoking original lit crit plus bio.,
Eelie and the big cats by Billy Arjan Singh - ground-breaking study of animal behaviour (India)

My dip into The Complete Major Prose Plays. I read the complete twelve play cycle earlier, and this year revisited some of the highlights. Ibsen had an unflinching view of society and how it drives individuals in ways they can't control.
Two books I read as part of my investigation of Eastern religion and philosophy:
The Analects of Confucius, which is not religious in a Western sense since Confucius has nothing to say about the existence of God or the immortality of the soul. Instead this book is a guide to how people can live together in a society without laws or punishment.
And The Bhagavad Gita a New Verse Translation a deeply mystical poem that explores the nature of the soul.
