"Give us greed over hate, over fear, even over charity. There was much less chance of things going wrong."

This is a Mystery disguised as Historical Fiction!

The book was written in chapters that alternate between the narratives of a girl on her experiences growing up in mid 1700s England and what she went through to solve the mystery of her mother and to reclaim what she believes is her fortune; and also in third person of another main character which is connected to her journey. This is definitely a book for historical fiction fans, although throughout the book I did get a bit annoyed with the narratives of the girl and also a bit impatient with some of the detailed descriptions of events... until the final chapter, when all my doubts on the characters and plots were completely answered and solved in a way I did not expect to! This end of year cozy read ended up being one of my top favourite books of 2023.

I give this book 5 Stars and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a fun read with a bit of English provincial and social history, and also major plot twists.
