I know nothing about this book or the author—may be my favorite way to consume media.

Chris Neumann | 13 comments well...that was a tough first chapter.

Chris Neumann | 13 comments so, what's everyone thinking? so far, i think it is good. not much seems to be happening yet. but that may change.

How far in are you? I honestly haven't started. Going Clear is consuming all of my reading time. I'll start this weekend for sure though.

Chris Neumann | 13 comments I'm nearing page 200. I think I will slow down. Got some comics that need catching up on anyhow.

Well 200 pages in with nothing happening seems like a bad thing.

Chris Neumann | 13 comments lol, well i mean, things have happened. it just hasn't turned into a rip-roaring adventure yet. (and that is perfectly okay - maybe it just isn't that kind of book)

Just started. Neu, you didn't like that first chapter? I thought it was good, a bit nuts, but good. I can already tell this is going to be a book I need to read with my dictionary.

Matthew Malone | 27 comments Mod
I think he was just saying it was intense.

I'm only about 50 pages in but I'm not really feeling it yet. I'll keep going because I felt the same way with Cloud Atlas and eventually really enjoyed it.

Chris Neumann | 13 comments No, no, I did like it. I meant it was 'tough' as in it was a difficult thing to read about. So far I am liking the book.

Beth | 11 comments So far, I'm about 50-60 pages in. Around chapter 6. Neu that Ape was pretty ridiculous. So far I think the writing is really beautiful. Kind of elegant in a way, like I don't feel overwhelmed by it, but I also think it paints a really clear picture.

> the writing is really beautiful

Which makes it a nice pick to contrast our last read :p

I'm about a quarter of the way through. I'm not really sure where it's going but I am enjoying it. And yeah, the writing is like night and day compared with Ready Player One.

I'm going super slow. Steph is well past half. I'm only 100 pages in. I'm really liking it. The only issue is that it takes me forever to get through just 10 pages and the names are just now starting to settle in my brain.

I'm really digging the environment and how well the author paints that world. I find myself craving more spare time to go back. I also find myself wikipedia'ing a ridiculous amount of stuff. WTF is Batavia? "The Netherlands from 1795 to 1806 as a French vassal state".... aaaahhhhhhh okay.

It's funny that you mention the names. I'm curious how everyone will pronounce them. I also felt like it took forever to progress through a few pages but not in a negative way.

I finished last night and really liked it although I'm not sure how to describe it. The characters and world felt very authentic and I'm going to miss them.

One odd thing: Did anyone else find the mixing of internal monologue and dialogue strange? It made me reread quite a few exchanges. Even so, I liked how it was used.

William Pitt for life.

Chris Neumann | 13 comments I took a break from this book because I felt I was reading it too fast, and read two other books in the meantime. Will get back to it after I finish the new Dan Simmons.

I finished. I liked it. I liked tons. I found the book sad, finishing left me in a warm somber mood... in a good way.

I really wish I knew another language.

I'm looking forward to hanging out so we can chat about it.
