Colson Whitehead was born in 1969 and the book was published in 1999, so I figure the majority of the writing was pre-30 :-)
I can't remember why I added this book to my to-read list in the first place but it was interesting. Here is my review: Set in a alternate America, Lila Mae Watson is a the first colored, female elevator inspector. After an elevator she inspects crashes, she is wept up in the politics of elevators, Race and the Mob.

Reminds me of Ellison's Invisible Man.
