NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11071 comments Steeplechase - Raven’s Roost Red Rose hedge - read a short story that fits your last tag - slice of life. I chose the title story in Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri.

I read this book before, and I really liked it. My memory of this particular story was that it was an unflattering story about a careless American family. I was a little off. It’s about a young American-born Indian family visiting India to visit family and see the sights. They hire a tour guide to bring them to see the Sun Temple. The story is told from the pov of the tour guide, who also has a job as an interpreter for a medical doctor. In this reading, I found the primary mis-interpretation to be more humorous.

I intended to stop there, but I kept listening to the end. There is a poignant story about the lonely wife of a college professor who babysits a child after school. In contrast, there is a rather funny story about a couple who find a Christian items hidden throughout their house. I especially enjoyed the stories set in India in close neighborhoods. My favorite is still the last story in the collection. It’s about a shy student who lives in a boarding house owned by a 100 year old woman, while waiting for his new wife to arrive from India. This is my favorite book by this author.
