The first book is definitely children book, but the series becomes much darker as the heroes grow up and deal with more serious problems.

Hello all!
Finally I was able to start with the first one... and I agree with @Dagny... J.K. Rowling's writing is indeed fabulous!
I'm enjoying reading each and every line! And the entire scenes are running in my mind with utmost clarity, thanks to the amazing movie adaptation that I've watched atleast 50 times by now.

That's one "benefit" I don't have: along with never reading the books, I've never seen the movies either. :/

ROFL...... OMG! You kidding me! You are just so adorable Dagny... hehe!
I reckon you haven't watched the movies either, eh?

Actually they are pretty good, I'm sure you'll like them :)

I'm done with book one and I LOVED it!!!!!
I'll be starting with the second one tomorrow....
I loved Rowling's writing and it was such a treat... after a real, really long time I read a book tucked in my cozy bed (and sometimes couch), forgetting all my worries and the need to finish the book fast. I totally lost myself in this magical world and I wish I can go in the book in some way!

The book is so simple and plain, something that I was not expecting at all! I thought that it will be full of fast-paced, tricky-name stuff but to my pleasant surprise, it was a really cozy read... and above all I love the jacket of my book, it feels like Wax.... If you're wondering then this is the one I have:
Harry Potter & the Philosopher's Stone (Harry Potter, #1) by J.K. Rowling

Really?! Have you ever read LOTR or any other YA book for that matter?

message 11: by Vatsa (new)

Vatsa | 7 comments Well yes. Are u saying LOTR is children's book?
what I meant was HP s easy even for a 8-10 year old.. I don't think the same s true for LOTR.
One of the reasons for HP's success was its appeal regardless of age-from children, teens, adults so on..
The story is simple enough(atleast in the first few books) for children to keep up yet detailed enough to fascinate adults..

I know that already! But I'm talking about the genre... There are two types of writings... simple and complex and as a reviewer I'm obliged to comment on what type of writing it is!
And what you are saying stands for children in India... Otherwise LOTR and Hobbit is a ya read and yes 10-11 year old children read and understand LOTR and Hobbit very nicely...

PS: You are new here, right? Please visit the introduction board and introduce yourself there. That will be a proper way of entering and commenting on our discussion boards. Steve | 208 comments Okay, I'm right behind you, Heena! I finished book #1 today, and my review is here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I liked it, but I had to keep reminding myself it was a children's book I was reading! Not bad, but definitely not one I would normally pick up. I'll keep reading the rest of the series, though: it is entertaining, and like Heena said, it's "cozy".

As for the LOTR/Hobbit debate on-going here, I don't think this is a valid comparison. The Hobbit, by Tolkien's own words, was a child's story, while LOTR was definitely written for adults. Not that a child couldn't read and understand, but the problems the main characters were facing were much more adult in nature than what was found in The Hobbit.

I agree @Kim! Dursleys just want to make his life miserable... And as Dagny said, yea, she was (atleast that's what they showed in the movie and it sounds like that only...)
To be honest, if I would have been at her place, i would have been jealous too, but her being so rude to harry (infact her hatred for Harry and his family) is wrong and really irritating... But that's how you love Harry even more... isn't it...

I'm glad @Dagny that you are enjoying it... if you like it now, you'll love it in further pages... It keeps on getting better and better!!!

@Vatsa... Sorry for the mini-outburst! Had a tough day (that day.)
And no worries... it wasn't an argument, so to say, more like a heady discussion :)
Thanks for going over to the intro board and posting :D
Have a great day!!!

@Steve: Yea... I see that now... And I agree, it starts off as a children's book but slowly it grows into a serious and tough read... :)
BTW... loved your review :)

I loved the first one... and I'll start with the second one as soon as I finish Divergent (which I'm almost done with.) So probably tomorrow...
Can't wait to see what happens when Harry returns to the Dursleys...
Though I have an idea (as I watched the movie) but still knowing the entire thing makes me read it even more... Books are ever so better than the movies!!!

Steve | 208 comments Done with Chamber of Secrets! Series is getting better, and I like this one much more than Sorcerer's Stone.

My review is here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

One thing that I liked is the losing of the "Hardy Boys/Scooby Doo" feel. I don't know if it is from Rowling's growing as a writer, or if the overall, extended storyline is becoming more elaborate.

Maggie the Muskoka Library Mouse (mcurry1990) Such a wonderful series! "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" is by far my favourite book of the seven. The Triwizard Tournament is so exciting!
