Book read in the 1994/95 school year as a 6th grade school assignment.
This book was a middle grades fiction book where a diverse group of people were summoned together to determine who is supposed to inherit something from a man who died. There is a mystery in how the man died, possibly the insinuation that he may have been murdered by one of the people.
There was a black person. There was an Greek person. The author makes a line in the book at one point that the Greek person's skin was darker than the black person's skin.
There was also an asian man, who might have been a business competitor of the deceased. This man kept eating chocolate bars throughout the book, claiming it was to help alleviate pain from his stomach ulcer.
There was also a younger girl (maybe 10-ish?). I want to say she had pigtails and wore overalls. At the end of the book, the girl is the one who discovers the answer to the mystery -- that the man is not actually dead. But that he faked his death as an opportunity to help the people he summoned and to start over.
