I have read and enjoyed other books by this author, but this book was definitely different from those, both in terms of content and genre. In this dystopian novel set in the near-future United States, China and Chinese people have become the scapegoats for everything that is wrong in the world. The book portrays a country living in fear of otherness, where the passing of a law to Protect American Culture and Traditions (PACT) allows for the removal of children from their parents for their “protection”, and it allows for cultural witch hunts to be carried out. This book was first published in 2022 and, it seemed very political in nature, and relevant to lots of social issues of today including injustice, censorship and racial prejudice. This was a very moving and thought-provoking book, and it is a book that I think could work very well as a book club read due to the amount of discussion it could lead to.
