Play Book Tag discussion

This is set in a small northern Anishinaabe community in Northern Ontario Canada. Though the community has been adding electricity, satellite and cell phones, computers and electronics due to a hydro project, power is still somewhat spotty. So when power goes out no one is too upset at first. But it never comes back. The community tries to lean on their traditional ways to survive but not everyone has the knowledge or incentive.

Evan Whitesky has been learning the traditional ways and the ceremonies of their ancestors from his father and the elders. His family is very practical about the changes. It is winter and food and heat are becoming a problem when people from the South start showing up and trying to take control. This was a short, sparse, story of an apocalypse, the challenges and the ethics around survival.

I would have liked a little more background on the actual situation outside their community, but the issues are portrayed in a microcosm and that is OK. Very well done. There is apparently a second volume which I am going to try to read.

Great review. I liked this one a lot. I wanted to know the bigger picture too. I wanted to know where and how it started, and why communication with the rest of the world broke down. The mystery of it increased the tension a lot for me. I want to read the next book, but I’m a little nervous about it. I really loved Station Eleven though which was even scarier.

One of the aspects I really liked about this was that we don't know the cause. Our imaginations are free to make something up, based on what we did know. I didn't think it was nuclear war or a pandemic.

I'm planning to read the next book in May. I'll be on vacation the first two weeks and am just starting to put together a vacation reading list.

I picked up the next one at my library this week, so now I really need to read this one.
