This book tells the story of the people working for a family-owned newspaper in Rome with connections to New York and Paris. Each chapter features an individual (and mentions some of the other employees), telling parts of their life stories and how they interrelate to the others working for the newspaper, delving into rivalries, friendships, infighting, gossip, as well as significant life events. The slim plot revolves around the lifecycle of the newspaper from inception to conclusion of business over several decades. It points out changes in technology, which of course affected the way news is gathered and reported, and over the course of years, significantly impacted the business model of newspaper publications. But aside from the business itself, the primary highlight of this book is the development of its characters. Each person is beautifully drawn, with strengths, eccentricities, insecurities, and foibles. The author is quite accomplished at probing the thoughts, motivations, emotions, and flaws of this diverse group of people. I have read other books by Tom Rachman, and in each one I am finding that he excels at creating “real” people with interesting lives. He is rapidly becoming one of my favorite authors.
