Anita Pomerantz | 9280 comments Again, I thought this vote would be closer! I'm announcing a bit early because it's a very clear decision, and I have a 2-3 hour drive today - - and I know everyone is waiting!

The other two tags had their supporters, but were exactly tied, lol. But there's no chance they catch up.

The tag for next month is:

debut

Please share your reading plans and recommendations below.

Remember, for the regular monthly reads, the book can be shelved as "debut" on Goodreads, or be a book that is not yet shelved that way but you feel should be.

One way to find books to read for this tag is to please visit:

https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/...

We encourage people to link to additional lists below if they find them.

Happy Reading!!!

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12569 comments So happy to see that this won. The last few tags have agreed with me enough that I have been able to contribute to my BWF team more than in the beginning of the year.

Theresa | 15511 comments Excellent!

John Warner (jwarner6comcastnet) | 96 comments After reviewing the link for this tag, I was surprised at how many debuts I have read.

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 8412 comments Yippee Skippee ... Just got an ARC of a debut work in the mail yesterday. Perfect timing!

Of course, it might not have the 5 tags for debut if it's really new!

message 8: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12914 comments I love this tag....

KateNZ | 4099 comments So happy!

message 11: by Sue (new)

Sue | 2715 comments Exited about this tag. I'm planning to find some "new to me" authors, and also look back to the debuts from some old favorite authors.

I like this list. It's mind blowing to think of the success and the lasting legacy of some of these first novels.

Of course, some of the titles on the list aren't actually debuts. Fans don't always check publication dates.

This is what I"m doing as well. Also some debuts of authors where I've only read one of their later books even if they are aren't a favourite author.

Readers don't always narrowly define DEBUT either. For example, they may tag if first by author in new genre, or new series even. Back in the day, some may have originally published under a pseudonym where it was a debut under that name but author published before under own or different name, then later all got gathered and new printings published under one name.

message 15: by Holly R W (new)

Holly R W | 3108 comments I read a fair number of debuts and enjoy them. Here is my Debut shelf of books, complete with reviews, for those who might want to browse them.

message 16: by NancyJ (new)

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11063 comments Kate and I planned a buddy read for The Ministry of Time and others said they’d join in when they can. ( It has long library waitlists. )

message 17: by Anita (last edited Jun 22, 2024 12:41PM) (new)

Anita Pomerantz | 9280 comments Also every year the Goodreads Choice Awards have a debut category. There might be some good finds there.

If any literary fiction lovers are looking for a strong, short book, I really enjoyed Monstrilio.

message 18: by LibraryCin (new)

LibraryCin | 11675 comments I don't recall it, but apparently we did "Debut" in March 2019, as well:
"March 2019: Debut - 118 books read"

The bookshelf itself currently says 117, so something must have been removed since March 2019, I suppose.

message 19: by NancyJ (last edited Jun 22, 2024 02:39PM) (new)

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11063 comments I had other challenges for debut books recently so I have a lot of books. Some of my all-time favorite books were debuts.

Here is my original debut shelf:

Here is my new Debut-bwf shelf for the BWF challenge:

The listopia will be up soon.

I've read all but two, Girl in Transition and The Bees.. The Rosie Project was a complete surprise 5 star for me.

I see that you've given The Bean Trees 5 stars. I love that too, my introduction to Barbara Kingsolver many years ago.

Thanks Holly. I love this list. I bumped up Florence Adler, and added Etta and Otto and … to my list of potentials for the month. I wouldn’t mind rereading Beantree and Language of Flowers too.

message 23: by KateNZ (new)

KateNZ | 4099 comments I’ve never read The Bean Trees and I’d forgotten it was her debut - straight onto the list! Thanks!

Jen (jentrewren) | 1114 comments Jen K wrote: "I am very excited this one won. It is a nice variety."

Exactly! Something for everyone because all genres of author had a debut at some point.

KateNZ | 4099 comments Fabulous list all round, Holly.

message 26: by Booknblues (new)

Booknblues | 12055 comments This is the one, I had hoped for. I have a number on my want to read list, but not sure what I'm going to read yet.

message 27: by Joy D (new)

Joy D | 10075 comments I highly recommend this debut novel from a Rwandan-born author who now lives in Namibia - I haven't seen too many of my friends reading it, but I loved it:
The Eternal Audience of One by Rémy Ngamije

message 28: by KateNZ (new)

Fabulous list, Holly! While I have read or have many on my TBR, you still alerted me to soooo many! Thanks for sharing.

Want to put a good word in for The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey - and with all of us in the US suffering from dreadful heat, it will be a 'cool' escape in July.

message 30: by Theresa (last edited Jun 22, 2024 10:24PM) (new)

Theresa | 15511 comments @Nancy- I am still looking through your shelves though I think I have reached saturation, LOL. However one thing that has come out of this is that I have added debut tag to those books I have read either before I had a debut shelf or just did not realize were a debut. A few I am considering rereading for one reason or another.

message 32: by Theresa (new)

Theresa | 15511 comments @BnB - I see Tender at the Bone: Growing Up at the Table is tagged DEBUT. We have that as a buddy read on Unofficial Trim whenever that number gets picked. Are you up for just swapping it out for whatever number is picked for July? Seems so convenient. Besides, I am behind at least 3 books in Trim ... might as well swap out the next for one I will get to!

I could do that. I'm not hearing a debut singing my name at the moment.

I'm waiting on that pick too. Guess it is the reality of doing reading challenges where everyone is in different time zones. On the plus we have a worldwide group of people looking out for new books we might otherwise miss. Love being in this group.

message 35: by Theresa (new)

Theresa | 15511 comments And everyone seem really busy these days too.

I agree, Jen, this is such a wonderful group.

Great! I will set up a buddy read July 1. Anyone is of course welcome to join. I have even located my paperback copied.

FYI - I do not believe it has sufficient tags for BWF, if that matters to anyone thinking of joining. Doesn't with me.

Thanks for the note Theresa. It has only 2 debut tags, but works for a letter match for bwf. I’ve been waiting for her newest Paris book all month.

message 38: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12914 comments BnB -I am looking at my own debut list to see if there is something on there you might like. Of course I haven't read any of these yet, but....

Looking for Jane
These Ghosts are Family
Wild Women and the Blues
The Pearl that Broke its Shell
Patron Saint of Liars
The House at Riverton - (Ist Kate Morton)

I loved Tender at the Bone: Growing Up at the Table when I read it and hope you do too!

What's ironic, is that normally I have lots of books coming up that are debuts, but don't have any debuts currently on my TBR list.

I'm glad that you and others here are finding my Debut shelf interesting. ;0)

I bought the Paris book last week when at one of my local indie bookstores. No time to read right now but had to own it!

message 44: by Joanne (new)

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12569 comments I can recommend, also on Holly's list, The Turner House - a good family saga 4 stars from me-and it also fits for BWF's letter and tag, for those playing.

message 45: by Karin (new)

Karin | 9210 comments Good idea sharing shelves--here's my Debut shelf, but it's probably not complete with ever debut I've read. https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

I'll be adding one more once I catch up on my reviews.

message 46: by Book Concierge (new)

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 8412 comments I'll probably reread To Kill a Mockingbird.

Last time I re-read it was in 2018 ...

message 47: by Jason (new)

Jason Oliver | 3045 comments I have picked on three books to read of debut but might add some more.

Forever, Interrupted
A Woman Is No Man
Uncle Tom’s Cabin

I recently discovered The Story of Edgar Sawtelle, but I am not sure if I want to tackle this one yet.

I also have Edgar on my TBR/Keep attempting to read.

I'm currently reading The Thursday Murder ClubThe Thursday Murder Club which was going quite well until life kicked me in the head again today. I think that fits Debut?

I also have Lessons in Chemistry which I keep trying to get to and Remarkably Bright Creatures which also sounds fabulous.....now if only I can switch my head off and get back to my books.
