The September Challenge - 2024

To earn points in this challenge, simply read and review as normal, but if you would like to help your team earn some bonus points, then there are a number of ways to do that.
1. If your book has an edition published in September (of any year) you will earn 5 bonus points (these are added to the individual's totals).
2. If your book has the word 'September' in the title/series name/author name/blurb, you will earn 5 bonus points (these are added to the individual's totals).
3. If your book has any of the letters of 'September' in the title/series name/author's name (S, E, P, T, M, B, R) you can claim those when you post your book, at the following rates -
~ Adult/YA without illustrations = 1 letter for every 50 pages
~ Middle-grade/children's books without illustrations = 1 letter for every 75 pages
~ Manga, graphic novels, plays, poetry, and books written in verse = 1 letter for every 150 pages
Bonus points will be given based on a rate of 1 point per letter claimed, and will be added to individuals' scores.
4. Claimed letters will be tracked for the team to spell out 'September', there are 9 letters, so as a team it will take around 450 pages to complete. Each time this is completed the team will earn 10 bonus points.

5. You can also still earn Hermione bonus points if your book has more than 600 pages.

*'&' may be counted as 'and'.
* Numbers in titles may be used, but each number is counted individually, so '100' would be one-zero-zero, not one-hundred.
*Only one edition can be used to claim bonus letters, you cannot take two letters from one edition and three from another for example.
* You can use any name listed for your chosen book on Goodreads, including pseudonyms, and names of translators, narrators, editors, etc.
* Any letters after punctuation in the title, can also be used.
* You may use one edition for page count, and another for claiming bonus letters.
* It's up to you which letters you claim if there are multiple options. If you want to claim 5 S's for example, and there are 5 S's available in your chosen book's title/series/author etc, then you can claim 5 S's. However, if there are not 5 S's, you wouldn't be able to claim 5 S's.
* If you choose to add together multiple books to reach the minimum page count, you can only choose letters from one of those books not all of them.

* The minimum page counts for points are:
~ Adult/YA without illustrations = 50 pages
~ Middle-grade/children's books without illustrations = 75 pages

* Books may be added together to reach these minimums, as long as all books are under the minimum.
Reviews:
* A review or 4 detailed updates will be required for each book read.
* One book per comment on the review thread (unless adding books together).
* Maximum of 10 reviews per person in a day.
Re-Reads / Starting Again:
* Re-reads are allowed in this challenge.
Buddy Reads:
* Buddy reads must take place within this group to gain buddy read points.
* You must make at least 4 comments, including a reply to a buddy if possible.
* You may start up to 7 days before the start date, and 14 days after.
* September GBRs also count.
Start Times:
* This challenge will begin and end on Goodreads time (PST) - 00:01 on September 1st 2024 PST, to 00:01 on October 1st 2024 PST.

(Bonus points for buddy reads will only be given if the buddy read has taken place in this group.)
★ If books are long enough to count on their own (50/75/150 pages) they will be scored on their own.
★ Individual bonus points will be awarded based on number of letters claimed at a rate of 1 point per letter claimed.
Bonus points will also be awarded at a rate of 5 points if a book has an edition published in September, and/or has the word September in the title/series name/author name/blurb of the book.
★ Team bonus points will be awarded at a rate of 10 points each time the word 'September' is completed.
Hermione bonus points can be earned on books over 600 pages long, because Hermione loves a big book, and we love Hermione ❤️
Over 600 pages unillustrated book = 12 points
Over 600 pages unillustrated childrens/middle-grade book = 8 points
Over 600 pages illustrated/poetry etc. = 4 points

This challenge will be a team challenge. We will have a small number of teams, with a mixture of readers in each. When signing up please let us know whether you would like to be on a team, or whether you would like to go solo ☺
Teams should be posted by late August. If you sign up after teams are posted, we will try to add you to a team, but we may not always be able to. You may be asked to join a waiting list. Please sign up as early as possible to avoid disappointment.

Are we just claiming 1 of the bonus point options or are they all stacking? I see the letters can based on page count but can I claim the letters and published in September?

This will be a team reading challenge which will run from September 1st 2024 to September 30th 2024. Results will be announced on October 1st 2024.
To complete this challenge, participants will be split into teams. Each team will read books of their own choice (which fit the challenge guidelines), and points will be awarded based on the length of the book, and whether you have buddy-read your book. You can also earn some bonus points by completing completing the tasks below.
You may also choose to take part in this challenge as a solo participant ☺
