Killer Clown Roundup

Team Challenge
September 2024 - November 2024

Please take some time and choose a team name. You will also need to choose which clown you want to catch first. Choose wisely because some clown require more than others. As such, those clowns will net more points. Let me know when you have made your choices.

Team
Lexi
Judith
Sammy

Rules
⛓️Each clown has specific chains and/or tasks that need to be completed.
Examples:
1. Create a chain of 3 using titles consecutively (ABC)
-All the Light We Cannot See
-Becoming Mrs. Lewis
-Catching Fire
2. Create a chain of 3 with "dog" in the titles
-Shoe Dog: A Memoir by the Creator of Nike
-The Dog Stars
-Hot Dog Girl

⛓️One person should NOT complete a whole chain by themselves. This is a team challenge. However, if a clown has multiple chains and a slower reader can only/want to only read for 1 or 2 chains (they must read at least one), then the other two faster readers on the team can complete the other chains between the two of them.
⛓️You may choose which clown from the list to capture first but you MUST complete it BEFORE starting a new clown.
⛓️You may use or drop articles: A, An, The
⛓️If you somehow manage to incorporate a Buddy Read into a chain, you can earn points based on the BR tier system.
⛓️Standard Rules Apply
⛓️At the end of the official challenge (last day of November), your team may choose to continue on at your own pace. There will be no points accumulated after November but you can finish any clowns that you didn't get to during the challenge.

Scoring
You will get 3 points for every completed book (9 per completed chain) PLUS page points.
(image with points is included in your spreadsheet)

Submit your team name and your first clown request in the check-in thread.

Lexi | 778 comments I found us, hi all.

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 3768 comments Hello ladies!

I'm terrible at coming up with names. Where's Jenny when we need her? 😆

So I only actually know two of these lovely creatures (the obvious two), but happy to start anywhere.

message 6: by Lexi (new)

Lexi | 778 comments I only know two as well. Shall we ask Judith to pick one of those two to start ?

message 7: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 3768 comments Works for me.

Jenny chickened out

message 9: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 3768 comments I know she did. I expected no different. You used the C word 😆

I gave her virtual cookies and she still wouldn’t play.

message 11: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 3768 comments I think it's gonna take a lot more than cookies!

message 12: by Judith (new)

Judith (brownie72011) | 916 comments Hello!!!

How about we start with the obvious, Pennywise?

message 13: by Judith (new)

Judith (brownie72011) | 916 comments As for names, I’m only generally able to think of alliteration names

Clown Crushers
Harlequin Heroines
Pennywise’s Proofreader

message 14: by Judith (new)

Judith (brownie72011) | 916 comments Not sure if any of those are all that great, I’ll try and give it a think

She asked for the cookies and then reneged. Some people's children!

message 16: by Lexi (new)

Lexi | 778 comments Sounds good on Pennywise. Also, I'm good with Harlequin Heroines of your options.

Sammy, any thoughts?

message 17: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 3768 comments I'm good with both Harlequins and Pennywise 😁

I get where she's coming from though. I have phobias, and all the baked goods in the world couldn't get me on board with a challenge where I'd have to even look at the word all the time 😆

I might resolve to do so, but I would 100% chicken out!

Checked us in for our first tasks

Pennywise (IT)

IT is a shapeshifting creature from the species known as Deadlights. IT arrived on Earth in an event similar to an asteroid impact landing in Derry, Maine. Once people settled here, IT adopted a 25-27 year hibernation, waking to kill and eat.

Its true form seems to be a female spider but it can morph into any human animal, nonhuman animal or object, and any combination thereof. There are benefits to this ability because IT can manipulate its targets by appearing as loved ones to lure them into traps or as their worst fears. It's favorite form is that of a clown named "Pennywise" because small children love clowns. At the same time, many people fear clowns.

IT feeds on humans but prefers children as they are easier to scare and manipulate. According to the creature, frightened flesh tastes better and uses fear to "salt the meat".

To capture IT, he must be in his clown form or he will trick you. You must force him into his clown form BEFORE you chain him up. Spell out CLOWN. Then complete the chains below.
C
L
O
W
N

Complete the following tasks Must complete the spellout above 1st
Arm 1: Read a chain of 3 books set in Maine
Arm 2: Read a chain of 3 books with shapeshifters
Leg 1: Read a chain of 3 books that start with a letter in SPIDER
Leg 2: Read a chain of 3 books that have 25 or 27 intact in the page count (example: 250 pgs or 127 pgs)

Lexi | 778 comments Thank you

message 24: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 3768 comments Ok, gonna hit pause on my current read, as it doesn't work for clown, but does for spider. Just waiting to hear what we can use for the spell-out so I can see if the last 2 books I have planned for round 1 of turf wars can fit. (I call dibs on the C if we can use series, lol)

Also, how do we want to play this? Speed or points? I'm happy to attempt to only use books over 300 or higher pages (no pressure on you guys to do the same if you don't want to!), but as turf wars calls for lots of short books, there may be a slight delay in my getting to the longer ones compared my my usual. 😆

Good luck with that strategy... twists and all.

message 26: by Judith (new)

Judith (brownie72011) | 916 comments Hmm, I tend to go for longer but I’m fine if people want to do a mix?

This is my only real challenge until the next NBRC starts which isn’t for a bit. So my reading is pretty flexible

Flexible is good

message 28: by Judith (new)

Judith (brownie72011) | 916 comments We can use series, so C is yours Sammy!

message 29: by Judith (new)

Judith (brownie72011) | 916 comments I can take whatever for the letters. I have some O’s and W’s and really whatever needs to be grabbed

message 30: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 3768 comments Donna wrote: "Good luck with that strategy... twists and all"

You do realise we're on the same turf team? It's in your best interests to make life easier for me 😆

message 31: by Judith (new)

Judith (brownie72011) | 916 comments I would like the L though because of the adult NBRC BOM starting soon

message 32: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 3768 comments Works for me. I'll scoop up something that isn't claimed yet once I finish this one. I should be able to find something for anything.

message 33: by Lexi (new)

Lexi | 778 comments I'll tend to do over 300 pages whenever possible but for some like the 25 or 27 one, it is likely going to be in the 250s or 270s as those are much easier to find. Also, if task is very specific, but for letters and such, I'll read over 300.

I have two 500 pages going now so I'll see if they fit.

message 34: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 3768 comments I have one with 625 pages coming up, so it's a perfect fit.

Only shifter book in my tbr currently is 400 pages (not counting Sookie books, which tend to be shorter).

Just need to find something set in Maine. Not really looking to re-read King this minute unless I can't find anything else, but shall go do some investigating.

message 35: by Lexi (new)

Lexi | 778 comments I need to find a Maine book too as the first one I thought was Maine was not

message 36: by Lexi (new)

Lexi | 778 comments And my 2 500 pages books fit nowhere (except for letter C), oh well

message 37: by Sammy (last edited Aug 31, 2024 01:26PM) (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 3768 comments If yours is 500 pages, you can take the C! (mine is 480) I'll be a couple of days, but will find something for the other letters.

message 38: by Lexi (last edited Aug 31, 2024 01:30PM) (new)

Lexi | 778 comments I'm reading really slowly too right now due to my cat being fed every 8 hours by feeding tube and it taking 40 min each time.

message 39: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 3768 comments Oh no, poor kitty! Not fun for either of you.

message 40: by Judith (new)

Judith (brownie72011) | 916 comments I found Clammed Up by Barbara Ross and it’s 378 pages for the Maine task

message 41: by Judith (new)

Judith (brownie72011) | 916 comments I’ve got to finish 2 library books before I really get going. They don’t work for any of the tasks so I’m going to try and get through them in the next couple days.

I’m halfway or thereabouts through Babel and A Fate Inked in Blood is reading fairly fast.

Then it’ll all be about the clowns

message 42: by Lexi (new)

Lexi | 778 comments I need to finish Kaikeyi first as I started it Aug 1 and it is not reading fast. I gave up on the audio and am back to reading.

The tasks are set up. I can't play favorites. Sorry about your luck.

message 44: by Lexi (new)

Lexi | 778 comments I found a Maine book over 300 pages - going with The Berry Pickers by Amanda Peters

I enjoyed the book but it wasn't a fast read. Sorry the audio wasn't working :(

I heard that was good, but both the ebook and audio have a few months wait at my library :(

message 47: by Judith (new)

Judith (brownie72011) | 916 comments I grabbed the L and the W in the spell out. Right now just the N is open

message 48: by Sammy (last edited Sep 01, 2024 04:58AM) (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 3768 comments I'm glad I'm not the only one with other stuff to get through first.

We should soon get the new TW lists, so will go through those and see if anything with an N shows up so I can kill 2 birds with one stone 😁

message 49: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 3768 comments I've completed the O and N. 😁

I won't be finishing any books now until the next round of Turf wars starts on the 4th, but I'll have a load part-read by then, so can finish them quickly after we finish the spell-out.

message 50: by Judith (new)

Judith (brownie72011) | 916 comments I finished Babel this morning and have the W on deck to start for an audio.

Trying to get A Fate Inked in Blood done today as well.

I am 40 percent through the L. I am trying to stick to the BOM schedule but can read ahead if it looks like the other letters will be done so we aren’t waiting
