Sue | 2718 comments I've read other books by Alvarez, and she often references the Mirabel sisters. And in an afterword in this book she describes her own interest in their history.

Known as the "Mariposas" (butterflies), the Mirabel sisters were part of the resistance to the Trujilo dictatorship in Dominican Republic in the 1950's, until their murder in 1960.

They are well-known and celebrated throughout Latin America, but relatively unknown in the United States.

This was a fictionalized and very moving retelling of their story.

Ellen | 3511 comments I read this one recently and was very moved by the sisters and their fight against a cruel dictatorship.

Booknblues | 12059 comments I read this one ages ago and it has stayed with me over the years.

Joy D | 10080 comments I agree this book is very well done. If anyone wants to read more about the Trujillo dictatorship, this book is fiction but follows the historical record closely:
The Feast of the Goat by Mario Vargas Llosa
