Lila Macapagal has recently returned to her small hometown of Shady Palms after a breakup with her Chicago boyfriend. She has come back to be with her loving, extended family and to help run her Tita Rosie's restaurant which is struggling financially. A despicable food critic, Lila's high school boyfriend Derrick, seems to be having difficulty breathing as he has lunch in Rosie's restaurant when he suddenly pitches forward into his meal. Lila is stunned to hear that he died at the hospital but this only begins the frightening path her life is on. Arrested for the suspected murder of Derrick, Lila is also shocked to learn that a large amount of drugs were found in her work locker. Released on bail, Lila knows she must investigate the crime herself to prove her innocence. She learns much about her small town and the less than legal means Derrick had used to earn his money. Aided by her best friend Adeena, Lila continues to question those involved until she finally comes face to face with a cold blooded killer.
This was a pleasant cozy mystery with a satisfying ending. I particularly enjoyed Lila's large family of Filipino aunts, godmothers and her grandmother. There are a few recipes included at the end of the book.
