This book reminded me a bit of Water for Elephants. An impoverished orphan in the Depression takes on an unexpected job, meets some unusual people and travels with animals. The giraffes were delightful, and the story had a fair amount of action, but I found it rather predictable. One reviewer pointed out how the story reflects the typical Hero's Journey. The audio narration was very good.
