Chapter 1
Melodies & Madness
Rayni felt like she had gone mad. She had woken up to her face pressed against cold stone, bones aching everywhere, the metallic taste of blood on her lips. Her blood.
As she tried to sit up, she felt a sharp pain in her side and knew something was broken.
No, not broken, stabbed. She gripped the chill handle of the dagger embedded in the rib cage, ripping off a strip of cloth from the hem of her shirt to cover the bloody gash.
Who did this? she thought. Her memories were scattered like beans in a bag. She could remember what she ate for breakfast five days ago, but not where she was born.
Forcing herself to sit up, she took note of her surroundings: a small stone bench with a thin blanket draped over its side, a metal cup laying on the cement floor filled with cold coffee, and next to it, a rock-hard chunk of bread.
It looked like a prison cell. And that wasn’t even the weirdest thing about it. A shrill, melodic whistle cut through the air, chilling her bones. She looked up, her mouth suddenly tasting unbearably sour as more blood dripped down her chin.
“Well, well, well…looks like Sleeping Beauty had a rough night.” The prisoner in the cell across from her taunted lazily.
He looked painfully familiar, with coal black hair and piercing blue eyes that looked older than he did, like they had seen many horrible things in his lifetime. He was staring at her, in a way that was almost uncomfortable. And he looked as if he hadn’t had a decent meal in many weeks.
He broke his gaze, slowly reaching into his pocket and distributing a silver coin. He twirled it in his fingers, whistling his strange tune again. And Rayni felt like she recognized it…
“Where is that melody from?” she cocked her head.
The boy looked up at her in cocky surprise. “Why do you wanna know?” he smirked.
She frowned.
“Alright, Sleeping Beauty, if it’s that impressive to you.”
“Impressive?” Rayni snorted. “Nah it’s just annoying me...”
The boy wasn’t ruffled. He tucked the silver coin back in his pocket and stood up.
“I’ll tell you what. If you do me a little favor, I’ll tell you my little secret.”
Rayni rolled her eyes. “I don’t want to know your secrets. I just asked you a simple question, buddy.”
“Alright. Well I’ll answer if you succeed in doing my favor.”
She groaned, then winced in agony as pain shot through her ribs in the vicinity of her wound.
He went right back to whistling.
“Alright, what’s the favor?”
The dark haired prisoner’s mouth slowly twisted into a grin. “I need you to hide a body.”
Chapter 2
Dark & Dreamy
“WHAT THE H*LL?!?” she scrambled to her feet.
“I’m sorry…I didn’t quite get that,” the prisoner deadpanned.
“What. the. H*LL!”
“You seem frightened,” he slid his hands down his cell bars in impatience.
“Well, how did you think I was gonna react? You just asked me to be your murder accomplice!”
“Ahh…I can see how you might interpret it like that,” Prisoner shook his head in amusement. “My fault. I need help hiding a living person.”
“Ok…that makes it better?” she retorted. “Now we’re kidnapping people. Great.”
“Yep!” He reached for the silver coin again, rubbing its polished surface with the pad of his thumb.
“Can you stop…with that coin? W-what are you even doing?”
“HEY!” A door suddenly shot open as two burly men bolted in. One had an uncanny resemblance to Albert Einstein, poofy hair and all. The other looked younger, with a dark, seething sneer. They both had guns attached to their belts.
“WHAT’S GOING ON IN HERE, BOY?” snorted Mr. Dark Seething Sneer. “We can hear you muttering to yourself from upstairs!”
“Has anyone told you two how handsome you are?” Prisoner smiled like the suck up he was.
“We are very handsome,” Einstein Guy echoed, as if he had a purpose in life [😲😂].
Rayni rolled her eyes. “For the LOVE OF GOD get me out of here!”
The two guards turned to face her, as if just noticing her for the first time. “Well…well…well…what do we have here?”
“A person…are you blind?” she muttered in annoyance.
“What did you say to me?” Dark & Seething reached for his gun.
Rayni’s eyes widened. “NOTHING. Just- also complimenting you!” She crept back a step, but her threadbare boot wobbled and she fell backwards, headfirst into the cold stone wall.

“SERIOUSLY WHAT IS WITH THESE CLIFFHANGERS?!!” Rayni rustled into consciousness and shot her knuckles backwards as she felt something slimy underneath her fingertips.
They collided with a rough cheekbone. “What just happened…did we literally just teleport into a dumpster? What are you…some pretty, magic princess?”
Prisoner stood up straighter, wincing and rubbing his face. “No, we did not teleport into a dumpster. And thanks for punching me.”
“Yeah, sure Princess,” she scanned her surroundings as Prisoner toyed with the silver coin again. They appeared to be in a dank, unpaved alleyway. Next to a dumpster.
“Hey…I thought you said we didn’t teleport into a dumpster,” she remarked.
“Yeah, Sherlock…we’re not in a dumpster; we’re next to one.”
Rayni shook a moldy apple core from her boot. “Sure looks like we were in one,” she paused. “OKAY OKAY!! I’m sorry, Princess!!”
He shoved the coin back in his pocket and clenched his jaw.
“You know, love? You’re quite annoying. And stop calling me ‘Princess.’” He reached for her arm and dragged her along the cobblestone alleyway.
They walked in silence for a while, passing a few vendors selling cloth and firewood besides dilapidated buildings. Rayni sighed. “Alright…well it’s not like you gave me anything else to call you by.”
“Hmm?”
“You said you didn’t want me to call you ‘princess.’ So what’s your name, then?”
“My name does not matter. But for now, you can call me Shade.”

Chapter 3
Shadow & Sun
Rayni burst out laughing, clutching her side and stopping in the middle of the streetway. "Nah. You did not just tell me to call you Shade. Like a shade as in a shadow??" she shook her head in amusement. "Oooh!! You're so mysterious, Princess!!"
"I'm called Shade because I murder annoying girls in the shade of the night, when they think they're alone.”
She backed away. "I'm assuming you're joking..."
He grinned and produced a jewel-encrusted dagger out of nowhere.
"OKAY! OKAY! Jeez, I'll call you Shade! Just stop pointing that thing at me."
He flipped the dagger gracefully between his fingers. "I'm not pointing it at you, love. I'm just holding it. You're not special. And besides, there's no shade around here anyway. If I murder you, they'll be witnesses." His lips curved into a mischievous grin as he started walking faster.
He was right; the sun was beaming so brightly that sweat droplets were quickly accumulating on Rayni's forehead. She was starting to feel lightheaded. And it didn't help that she hadn't drank water in...yeah she couldn't remember.
Also...how did she and [ahem] Shade get from a prison to a marketplace?
"I knocked out the guards and carried you to the slums where I threw you next to a dumpster until you finally woke up. By the way, Sleeping Beauty, what's with all these naps you're taking?"
Rayni frowned. "I'm sorry...did you just...like...read my mind? You're proving my theory you're some kind of a pretty, magic princess. "
"Of course I'm not reading your mind, love. You're thinking out loud," Shade twirled his knife again.
"Why are you calling me love?"
"Why are you calling me pretty?"
Rayni opened her mouth, and then closed it. "I never called you that."
"Yeah you did, love. I believe your exact words were that I'm a 'pretty, magic princess,'" he stopped walking, and took a step towards her. Then another step. He...reminded her of...cold winter nights and roaring bonfires and...cherries?
She breathed in sharply. "Whatever, princess. Where are we anyway?" she sighed as he frowned in confusion. "I...umm...can't remember anything past waking up in that prison cell."
"Really?"
"Yeah. And I have no idea where we are."
"Wow, you really don't remember anything. Okay...that-" he pointed to a snow-white castle with delicate, silver towers. She couldn't help it as her jaw dropped at its breathtaking beauty. Its shining, slender towers were framed between willowy cherry blossom trees. "-AYY you with me here? For the love of God, please don't faint again!!"
She slowly turned her head to face his silvery eyes, glowering in annoyance. "I'm not gonna faint. Umm...what were you saying?"
Shade raised an eyebrow, then stuffed his hands in his pockets. "That's Swan Castle, home to the Swan Royalty and their...let's say...delightful...daughter Charlotte."
"Yeah, I'm guessing she's not so delightful..."
"She's not delightful." He studied her for a second. "Um. We're in the Crowlands. Also known as the slums.
Everybody here is either dirt poor or an outlaw."
Rayni looked around. Piles of trash were stacked in the dirty gutters. Children sprinted across the unpaved roads with dirt smeared across their faces, dressed in tattered clothes and gripping flimsy pocket knives. Vendors swore despicable curses at no one in particular.
"Sooo do you...umm...live here?"
"No. I live in Ville." He paused. "Sparrow Ville." He didn't give any further explanation.
"And...why did you bring us here?"
He looked away. "There’s– there’s something I haven’t told you."
