Katherine Schneider's workaday life as a dentist in 1913 New York is upended when a patient reveals details of a deadly plot while under the influence of laughing gas. As she is plunged into danger, she seeks help from the dashing Lieutenant Jonathan Birch, a police officer she has long admired from afar.

Jonathan has harbored powerful feelings toward Katherine for years but never acted on them, knowing his dark history is something she could never abide. Now, with her safety on the line, he works alongside her through the nights as they unravel the criminal conspiracy that threatens her. And throughout it all, Jonathan fears what will happen should Katherine ever learn his deepest secrets.

Carole Jarvis | 145 comments Michelle, my copy of this book came in and I've read a couple of chapters. I'm really enjoying it so far.

Michelle | 626 comments I finished!

I liked this one a lot. Jonathan is my favorite character. I liked his mafia background and how he wanted to be part of the police family and excell in it. I think his relationship with Gallagher is a good example of iron sharpening iron. Their competition with each other caused them put forth their best efforts in order to out perform the other. I'm a fan of Elizabeth Camden. Her characters and storytelling always entertain me, but it's her ability to envelop me in the culture and era in which she writes that blows me away.

What did you think of 1913 NYC, Michelle? I'm a fan of police procedurals, so I found that element fascinating from a historical perspective. And I loved how she spotlighted the city's unsung night shift workers in her column. It was also interesting to see the famous William Randolph Hearst in action.

Michelle | 626 comments I thought Elizabeth Camden did a great job with the time period. Yes, I agree with you on the police procedures and Katherine's column. I also enjoyed reading about the baby owls and life at Martha Washington Hotel. Painless Parker Dentistry was interesting. I liked how unique history was a part of the story. It maked it feel like New York City in the 1910's.
