- Classic/Sci-Fi/Fantasy
- Finished: January 9th.
- 5 stars on Goodreads
I can’t believe I’ve seen the movie(s), but it’s taken me this long to read the dang book. Aside from some slightly mind boggling intellectual talk at the beginning, during the dinner hosted by our time traveller, before he embarks on his journey, this is a fairly simple and straight forward read. If I had concentrated on just reading, I would have easily finished it in one sitting. In any event, I really enjoyed this. It’s been a long (LONG) time since I’ve seen it, but if I recall correctly, the 1960 movie follows the book fairly closely. If I can find somewhere to stream it, I’d like to watch it again to see the differences.

The Silence of the Girls by Pat Barker
I like that many of the ancient Greek myths are now being told from the females’ side. They are the main characters, instead of a mere footnote. And Barker has done an exceedingly good job in bringing one of them to life.
Briseis is given short shrift when it comes to her story in The Iliad. A pawn between Achilles and Agamemnon, one has to wonder what her thoughts were, going from queen to slave. Well, wonder no more. Here, she is the central focus of the last days of the war. As her fortune swings back and forth, she, and the reader, are left to ponder her ultimate fate.
And while we are always aware of what fate holds in store for Achilles, his story as he moves toward it is almost as intriguing. I say almost because knowing that end removes some of the drama.
This is the first book in a trilogy; I eagerly look forward to the next story.

11th Hour by James Patterson & Maxine Paetro
This is book 11 of the Women's Murder Club.

Challenge complete!
Key Words: Storm, Break & Hour
I read Perfect Storm by Paige Shelton, Breaking the Code: A Father's Secret, a Daughter's Journey, and the Question That Changed Everything by Karen Fisher-Alaniz and The Burial Hour by Jeffery Deaver.

I read Beyond the Silence by Tracie Peterson. It kept me enthralled throughout the story, but the romance was CORNY!! And the ending was a bit over the top in my opinion. I enjoyed it though, and I’d gladly read another of Tracie Peterson’s books! 3.5 stars

Book: The Silence by Susan Allott
A dual timeline mystery that kept me guessing, major red herrings.
My review here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Storm Front
Storm Front by Jim Butcher was not something I would have normally picked up, but I'm glad I did. It was interesting enough that I am willing to try another from the series--later.
Key Word: Silence
Silenced Witness
Silenced Witness by Larry A. Winters kept me guessing as to whether the guilty party would be forced to face justice.
It's January 24th and I'm finally getting to my challenge read. I am reading
No One Can Know and really enjoying it so far! I think I'll get through it quickly.

My biggest unplanned read was Onyx Storm by Rebecca Yarros as I had another book picked out but then this arrived! If you've read Iron Flame and Fourth Wing, don't wait, it is worth disrupting your list for!!!
I also read Return to Virgin River by Robyn Carr (out of order but it is what it is), Time of Death by JDRobb (out of order), The Secret Hour by Luanne Rice, Twisted Twenty-Six by Janet Evanovich (also out of order, can you tell that bothers me a little?), Talking to Strangers: What We Should Know About the People We Don't Know (hmmm...they lie, but not all of them, and you can't really tell....I don't know), Break No Bones by Kathy Reichs, and The Fountains of Silence by Ruth Sepetys (can't rave enough about this one).
Onyx Storm and the Fountains of Silence were by far my favorites!
Also finished The Secret Sister by Elizabeth Lowell and West With Giraffes (I don't remember the author offhand but it was a loan from a friend and & I had to read it before seeing her - also very good!). I finished listening to America's First Daughter about Thomas Jefferson's daughter (good but long) and The Siren by Kiera Cass.

It's more of a short story than an actual book, and I plan on reading the rest of the Trilogy this weekend.

Father Knows Death by Jeffrey Allen
This book was interesting enough that I'm reading another from the series for February.

The Sign of the Twisted Candles by Carolyn Keene
It was perfect time to revisit this Nancy Drew mystery (it helped add to my six shooter target--a challenge from Rick Mills).
