Mbuye | 3383 comments Hmm. I don't seem to be there! 😏

Incidentally, Lesle, is there any date restriction on our choice of classics? May we limit ourselves to say,1999, now that we are well and truly off in the New Millennium? Or do all classics have to be before 1900? After all, if we are looking at movie adaptations, the books will be mostly after colour and sound were introduced.

Some non-fiction is considered classic by any standard.

And I suppose espionage could be considered a 'unique occupation!'

What about plays? Or poetry?

Could we include them somehow?

Many thanks.

I was thinking about Pride and Prejudice, of course, but I am not yet sure if I should join this challenge or not. Do I understand rule b) You may cross post one book from this challenge into other challenges correctly to mean that I can use max. one book from this challenge in other challenges? Does this include the 1.000.000 pages challenge, too? I could arrange myself with the Bingo challenge, but 1.000.000 pages is a team effort, so it would be a pity.

no you're not, it's a challenging one and I only know it from manuscripts where the first letter is big and goes over the line, here's some examples https://charlottemartindesigns.wordpr...

Kim wrote: "I'm probably being a bit dim but what is a 'Drop Cap' (#16)??!"

A "drop cap" in classic novels refers to a large capital letter, often elaborately designed, that appears at the beginning of a paragraph or chapter, acting as a visual marker to signify the start of a new section; this practice is deeply rooted in traditional book design, particularly in illuminated manuscripts where initial letters were often highly decorated and visually striking. The size of a drop cap is usually two or more lines.

Penguin has a series called Penguin Drop Caps here is a link to them:

I'm also thinking of Pride and Prejudice, especially as I just acquired it from a book swap event and have yet to read any Austen! There are a number of others on Mike's list that appeal too- the Maupassant, the Woolf options...

Jen R. (rosetung) | 398 comments Would be nice to hear from people your ideas about shifting narrative style (prompt #14)- what it means to you and what you might read for that, how it qualifies :) because I can't say I have a real grasp on that term.

Not sure if I did it correctly, but I used a book that alternated between third-person narrative about s.o. and that s.o.'s own words in the form of letters (first-person). Namely, the biography of Charlotte Brontë written by Elizabeth Gaskell. There are probably several ways to address this prompt and I hope that this is one of them 🀞
