Dang. I was set to read…
a first-in-series by a new-to-me author who just had the series published last year. It features a woman who leaves the rat race to open her own business out of the new house she just inherited. Her parents are coming to town for a visit and to dogsit their fur-grandson, while she attends an out-of-state (really, just across the border) convention of small-business owners. The convention is set to take place at the end of the week, coincidentally the same weekend there’s a first-responders’ convention in the same city. This gives MC enough time to ask her handsome fireman neighbor, who happens to be a volunteer instructor of the hobby she’s taken up at the community center on how to make pottery using a potter’s wheel and kiln, if he’d like to carpool with her to the conventions. He agrees, looking forward to spending time with MC.
The weekend arrives and they set off. Her parents agree to a weekend sleepover playdate for his pooch and they leave the two pals chasing one another in the yard while her parents wave good-bye.
At the convention, MC meets a handsome executive who says he’s looking to invest in a business and is intrigued by her ideas. She also meets a woman around her age who just started her own business. They hit it off, bonding over their latest experiences. They attend some of the same seminar sessions, snarkily chatting about the boring seminar leaders, etc.
MC agrees to have dinner with the executive, but lets him know her friends—old and new—will be joining. Turns out, however, the executive is an old nemesis of her neighbor, having had an affair with her neighbor’s ex. He saw them together and approached her sure that he could steal her away from her neighbor and gloat—once again. Before they can all get together for dinner, the two men have a loud, angry argument and the neighbor punches his nemesis and storms off. MC’s new seminar friend begs off dinner, too upset over the violence to eat. MC doesn’t see her neighbor for a couple of hours. He’d joined some buddies for a drink and to calm down.
When the executive turns up dead, MC at first accuses her neighbor, who can’t believe she thinks him capable of something so heinous. When she realizes her mistake, she apologizes and they work together to bring down the culprit, who turns out to be the neighbor’s ex—disguised so the executive wouldn’t recognize her. She killed him because right after she broke it off with the neighbor, the executive stole her ideas, bad-mouthed her at work, and had her fired. Then, he dropped her for her best friend. She changed her appearance, bided her time, and then followed him to the convention to confront him. She lashed out when he laughed in her face and bragged about what he’d done to her and how he gotten away with it. Not only that, he was going to do it again to the MC by stealing her innovative business app idea and selling it as his own. Stealing her away from the neighbor would have been icing on the cake.
She didn’t mean to allow her ex to be suspected and hopes he can forgive her for everything.
A few days later, MC and neighbor are relaxing in her porch swing watching their dogs play in the yard. He reaches over and grabs her hand as the sun sets.
The end. Or, just the beginning…
Now I have to find something else. :o(
I may be nuts, but I'm going to join this challenge. I don't know how well I'll do because I like reading what I like when I like, but what the heck. It's only 12 books max. And, it's a new year. Time for something new. Let's see how many of the 12 I can get.NEW YEAR’S CHALLENGE 2025

Nell- I was not able to post my Feb reads because my guess is that because I wasn’t listed as a player in the post I don’t seem to have the posting capabilities. I even tried to comment and list out all the books manually I read and I only have so much space. Anyway wondering if for the next month’s challenge you might add my name to the list of players and maybe that might work for me to post? I am hopeful and I love the creativity in how the list gets put together 😀

The link then goes right to your post for the challenges. You can start now if you want. It's still only February!

I'm the exact opposite, probably for this reason. I probably only use the mobile to post reviews, I do everything else on the desktop version.

I finally posted all the books I read while on holiday off the grid in February, and finished this challenge.
