BOTM FEBRUARY — So late in the day by Claire Keegan
date
newest »

I ended up reading 3 short stories in a book, when I was only after one of them. The only way I could find this story for a group read was in a book of 3 short stories. However not sorry that it happened this way - all three stories were good. One sentence can review each short story ~~
So Late in the Day ~~
A man set in his ways, at a time that women were unfairly treated.
The Long and Painful Death ~~
A rude German man berates a woman writer on retreat for not using her time wisely enough - in his opinion.
Antarctica ~~
Be careful whom you chose to cheat with.
I read this in one sitting, so worth the time of choosing this edition.

I agree with you Sandi, one story wasn’t enough for me too and I wanted more of Claire Keegan’s writing, so I ended up reading “Small things like these” as well and both the books were good. Looking forward to exploring more of this author writing.

I liked this short, very short, novel. It was a great size to hold and the painting on the front really appealed to me. I also think Claire Keegan is one of the best writers working today. I wonder how the story would have ended if Sabine had been Irish? Would she have felt able to step away from the wedding? What did she see in Cathal that made her fall in love with him? Did they argue over the Chinese? Did Cathal say the hurtful things he thought of ? How did she break it off ? So many questions! The sign of a novel with just the right words.

That was my least liked story of the three, but the one needing a bit more thought on my part.

You are so right Toni the book does hold a lot of questions, would things be different if Sabine hadn’t found out what Irish man thought? In the book Cathel is terms as being an “misogynist” but I just feel that all men love their own space and more or less feel the same way. Some just tend to show it, while some don’t. So in my opinion, limiting this to Irish man was a bit unfair.
Overall, I was wanting so much more and felt a bit sad that the story was so so very short.

A little about the Book
After an uneventful Friday at the Dublin office, Cathal faces into the long weekend and takes the bus home. There, his mind agitates over a woman named Sabine with whom he could have spent his life, had he acted differently. All evening, with only the television and a bottle of champagne for company, thoughts of this woman and others intrude - and the true significance of this particular date is revealed.
From one of the finest writers working today, Keegan's new story asks if a lack of generosity might ruin what could be between men and women.
Pages: 47(depending on the edition)
