Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments “See, I'm not much for PNR. If it is REALLY well written and/or not really romantasy, I'm good. Like that first Rebecca Yarros dragon thing Fourth Wing. I was surprised it was romantasy according to GR. It didn't really seem YA, either.

And IA's Burn for Me et seq. PNR??? I think not. Nor Written in Red. (what a great book)

But if it's all the internal monologue about "oh, he's too good for me" and descriptions of him and eventual sex scenes and stuff, I'm bored.

Series and individual book suggestions would be welcome. I like me a little bit of romance, but not a book centered on romance.”

Kateblue, I’ve quickly grabbed some suggestions for ya. Don’t have time to break them down, sorry.

This is an old series that’s still running about an FBI unit w/psychics: https://www.goodreads.com/series/5252...

Kateblue these are great Steph, thanks.

Someone just suggested Lizzie Grace-and I just happen to have the first book right here

I've been eyeing the Kristoff books for a while

The only Schwab I've read is Villains, which I rated *** and The Fragile Threads of Power which I rated ** (my review -- possibly too harsh https://www.goodreads.com/review/show... ) I also failed to get very far in A Darker Shade of Magic, though the worldbuilding intrigued me. So I will put her on the back burner for now.

Never heard of R.R. Haywood -- will look him up

I have Swan Song but have not read it because it is on the list of Hugo and Nebula award nominees and winners that I am reading with another group. I am sure we will read it sometime. I really do want to read it-it looks great

Got 3/4 of the way through Grimspace once and the book was due back at the library. (Yes, that was a while ago.) And then I just didn't care enough. I think that was her first novel and I always decided I would follow up with her later, so I will look for Perdition, but will probably try some others first

You Can Run -- I have a copy around here, I think. Ditto Rules of Redemption . . . searching

Have read all of Alex Verus and loved them except for that last novella (I keep trying to call him Versus)

I will be reading Galactic Bonds soonest. I have read Estep before and like her

intrigued by the name The Slaughtered Lamb-will check

Have the first two Jacky Leon, was thinking about joining the reread a month late. Is anyone else joining?

Read the first 3 Jane Yellowrock and loved them, didn't like #4 as well because it seemed everything changed too much, though I finished it, then tried to pick back up with #5 and have never gotten through the plane scene at the beginning after 3 tries. Not sure what I will do about it, but I certainly remember it. I particularly liked Yellowrock because it seemed that Faith Hunter's writing skills were better than many

Likely Sandra & I 😆

I've been eyeing the Kristoff books for a while
I get totally sucked in and always have a hard time putting the books down. Nevernight is my favorite of the two I mentioned.

👍🏼 Ah, yeah, maybe not a good fit then.

Never heard of R.R. Haywood -- will look him up
My husband introduced me to him. He's been reading his The Undead: The First Seven Days series, which I haven't, but we listen to all of this others together and love everything he writes.

I have Swan Song but have not read it because it is on the list of Hugo and Nebula award nominees and winners that I am reading with another group. I am sure we will read it sometime. I really do want to read it-it looks great
My husband and I have read the book and re-read/audiobook and loved it both times; hope you do, too

I've read a few of her others and those two were my favorites. I forgot about Honor Among Thieves, which I really enjoyed. It's by Rachel Caine/Ann Aguirre series.

You Can Run -- I have a copy around here, I think. Ditto Rules of Redemption . . . searching

👍🏼😆 I miss Verus. My husband & I are currently listening to his newest, An Inheritance of Magic, which is a good listen so far.

I will be reading Galactic Bonds soonest. I have read Estep before and like her
That one is my favorite of those of her's I've read so far. I have a love/hate relationship with Gin

Join us! We've got quite a few members reading along and everyone's enjoying it so far. It's a re-read for me, which I'm enjoying, too.

Read the first 3 Jane Yellowrock and loved them, didn't like #4 as well because it seemed everything changed too much, though I finished it, then tried to pick back up with #5 and have never gotten through the plane scene at the beginning after 3 tries. I push this series a lot b/c it's one of my all-time favorites, but it's not for everyone. Yellowrock grows and changes so much during the series, it's one of the best character developement/growth series I've read.

+ Not sure if you've read Magic for a Price, which was popular about a decade ago. I liked that one a lot, but I forgot to mention one of Devon Monk's that I think is underrated: House Immortal House Immortal is a trilogy and I thought it was very original. I tend to enjoy everything she writes.

Sandra | 25908 comments I'll put in a plug for Rules of Redemption (The Firebird Chronicles, #1) by T.A. White as well, I really, really liked that series :)

Verus is also intriguing, though I've only read the first few books so far.

Love Sam Quinn The Slaughtered Lamb Bookstore and Bar (Sam Quinn, #1) by Seana Kelly and also the spinoff series The Sea Wicche Chonronicles Bewicched (The Sea Wicche Chronicles, #1) by Seana Kelly

And really like the Jacky Leon books, which is a new read for me.

So I'm not crazy about Yellowrock either though I have gone back to it a few times since I found Nell. I love Nell. Try Soulwood. You do not need to read through Yellowrock first. Although Rick is in Soulwood, there is not much reference to Jane. They explain his mating completely and the problem with it in the first few novels, it is an overarc that usually doesn't involve the main plot.. The series is much more about Nell and her past in a multiple wife cult and future with a Psi-Led federal team.

Stealing Shadows by Kay Hooper which is the FBI Psychics series Steph mentioned in the first post is on Audible plus. I added it to my pile.

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments Thx! I’ve been keeping up with Soulwood and really enjoy it. And, Rick is much better suited to that series; he bugged me in JY.

He bugged a lot of people and pissed off the ones that liked him. I didn't like him in the first place. Sigh, that series is just not my series. I liked Bruiser and I think the last one I read, he ticked me off. There is also the self blame that she is constantly going through and then her best friend witch (name?) flip flops on her and ... argh.

Really never clicked but I do sometimes love them and then sometimes not so much so... I'll probably get through it at some point. I should have joined a series read along which would have pushed me. So many of my friends love it and it is fun to discuss. I have gone back to Nell and reread the series a couple times so it is way different for me.

I started that and gave the first two book 4 stars. I like it better than the Glimmer series (same author) which I didn't continue past the 2nd but it is pretty good also. I just have so many series and have to decide which ones to stick to and which to let be put to the side. I think I'll go back to Potluck but not Glimmer. Or maybe I'll go back to Glimmer, Glimmer of the Other. They are both worth reading and they are in Hoopla...

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments All understandable frustrations w/the JY characters.

message 12: by Amyiw (new)

Amyiw | 225 comments @Steph- I just finished the 3rd Sirantha Jax month before last and like it better than the first. One of the characters from the series is in Perdition as a 2nd character to the main. I read the first there also but decided that I had to finish Sirantha to understand why he is in Perdition. It is kind of answered in the 3rd.

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments I need to re-read both of those. It's been 10-15 since I first them, but they stuck with me.

what is Hoopla?

message 15: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments https://www.hoopladigital.com/home You can use to access your library. I used Overdrive, then Hoopla, now Libby https://libbyapp.com/shelf

message 16: by Amyiw (new)

Amyiw | 225 comments Just another library app for multiple media. I use it mainly for Audio books but sometimes ebooks which you have to use their app for. I have in on my iPad mini and on my Boox eReader which has the app.

Hoopla also has music and movies but I don't use that at all. I have watched library movies through Kanopy which you can add to a Firestick or Roku.

Libby took over Overdrive (which is almost completely dead, I use it on my computer still) but there is a positive to the Libby app as I can put multiple libraries and cards on it. Hoopla only allows one per app (which means per phone/tablet) I guess you could sign in an out of it. I used to do that with the Overdrive app. I liked that app better for how it worked but Libby is definitely better for me because of multiple libraries that I have.

They are all on audio now and all are in Hoopla here, or overdrive? I think it might be a combination. I just noticed that after years and years, books 3, 5, and 6 were on audio. For years it was 1, 2 and 4, were recorded and the other not. For the Dred series, 2 & 3 still have no audio but that's OK. If I get through these I think I'll be too stubborn not to read them. Perdition I thought was better than Sirantha up to book 3. I'd have to reread. I wanted to give Perdition a 5 but it was just too violent, according to my review. Funny as I remember loving it.

Time for a reread.
