Responsibility for handling the interview of Conklin following his arrest goes to Avery Hill. Despite two witnesses who place him at the scene of Skip’s shooting and a video of him being there, Conklin continues to deny having been there. How did Avery do in managing the interrogation? What did you make of Conklin’s behavior? Does it inform you in some way about the man?

Anita (anitanodiva) | 2953 comments Avery did an excellent job with the interview. I think he knew if he didn't Sam would have his ass. I was sad that he turned out to be such a horrible person. The early books in this series gave no indication of this at all. It was so sad.

I agree Anita.
I don't like what Force did with his character either in the previous book or this one. Conklin, along with Farnsworth and Malone, was one of Skip's closest friends and Sam's ally in the department. Conklin suddenly becoming evil had no foundation in the series at all.

Sharon Kallenberger Marzola | 3474 comments I agree with both of you. Force does take an easy way out too often.

Robin (robinmy) | 2450 comments Agree. It felt like the author just picked him out as the bad guy. He was a friend of Skips along with Malone and Farnsworth. I just don't see someone doing this.

Anita (anitanodiva) | 2953 comments Maybe if there had been more about Conklin's relationship with the cop turned councilman and his role in city politics also, it wouldn't have been such a surprise. I agree that Force just picked him, because she didn't lay any groundwork for this in the early books.
