I suppose I am the odd one out on this one. I did not love it. Personally I thought the book was way too long, and it could have been cut by at least 150 pages and still told a decent story. Our main character Andras Lévi, in my opinion, meandered and at times I was absolutely sick of him and the long descriptions of where he was and what was happening in his life and other characters.
The story is about Andre and his move from Hungry to Paris just before the start of WWII. He has moved there to attend a school for architects. He meets a woman, Klara Morgenstern, ten years his senior, and falls in love. As the affair heats up Andres's student visa expires and he is forced to return to Hungry. Taking Klara with him is out of the question, but Klara thinks differently.
Orringer's writing at times is beautiful but as I said previously, at times it just was too long, too much. Ultimately this is a story of love, loss, and the power that people have to hold things together in a devastating environment.
It was a good book, I just did not reach a 4 star point with it.
Very fair~. I think also, often with this genre, one needs to be in a mood, and honestly, when ever is someone in the mood for this? I think we are a little oversaturated with this setting sometimes, no matter how good or powerful the story.
I really love this one, Joanne, but totally respect and honor your reaction/opinion. Different strokes for different folks (and times in our lives...no way I'd have the patience for this tome right now).
