Quebec Adventure: Exploring the St. Lawrence River

Day 6: Côte-Nord

After Tadoussac, you enter the region known as Côte-Nord (North Coast), which covers the coast of the St. Lawrence River and the Gulf of St. Lawrence up to the border of the province of Labrador. This region extends inland and covers half the size of Quebec. It is home to vast landscapes and friendly people. You will want to visit the island of Anticosti, located in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. This national park became a UNESCO Heritage Site in 2023 for its exceptionally well-preserved and diverse deposits of fossils. It also boasts stunning white cliffs, secluded caves, and powerful waterfalls. It is a sanctuary for white-tailed deer and a true paradise for nature lovers.
* Read a large book (over 450 pages; share page count) OR read a book published in 2023 (share publication date).

Another interesting place to visit is the Mingan Archipelago National Park Reserve, located between the mainland and Anticosti Island. This group of 40 islands is known for the limestone monoliths standing on its coasts. The islands are inhabited by indigenous peoples that continue to use the land for traditional hunting, fishing, and trapping. Today it is considered one of the major historical heritage sites. On some of the islands it is possible to camp or hike in the forests that cover them, although many tourists limit themselves to observing the monoliths.
* Read a book set on an island (tell us where) OR read a book with a coastal scene on the cover (post cover).
Day 7: Gaspé Peninsula

A trip to Quebec must include the Gaspé Peninsula. Known as the cradle of Canada, it was here that Jacques Cartier landed in 1534. It is home to the final section of the St. Lawrence River. The central part of the peninsula is dominated by the Chic-Choc Mountains, an extension of the Appalachians. In fact, a section of the International Appalachian Trail is located here. Until a few years ago, the local economy was based mainly on fishing and agriculture, but now tourism has become increasingly important. The area has become a favorite destination in Quebec, offering excellent opportunities for hiking, cycling, wildlife observation, and water activities.
* Read a book where all the letters in GASPE can be found in its title (any order) OR read a book by one of your favorite authors (tell us why you love the author).

One of the most well-known destinations here is Percé, a town located on the shores of the Gulf, near the tip of the peninsula. There are two attractions here you won't want to miss. The first is Percé Rock, a rock formation that rises a short distance from the shore. It can actually be reached on foot during low tide. The rock owes its name (which means pierced) to its natural arch and has become one of Quebec's major landmarks. The other must-see is nearby Bonaventure Island, a bird sanctuary with a colony of 110,000 northern gannets. It is the most accessible gannet nesting place in the world and can be visited by boat, during which you can admire Percé Rock from the water.
* Read a series book #2 OR read a book with over 110,000 ratings on its GR Homepage (share number of ratings).
Day 8: Parks in the Gaspé Peninsula

Gaspé Peninsula is home to several protected areas, and I recommend visiting at least two of its national parks while there. An activity worth doing in Gaspésie National Park is climbing Mont Jacques Cartier, the highest peak in the area. With a little luck during this trek, you may spot a herd of caribou. During my stay, I was lucky to see a moose with her baby (keep a safe distance!). The area also has an abundance of beautiful lakes that are perfect for a day of kayaking or canoeing.
* Read a book set in a national park or protected area (tell us where) OR read a book where a wild animal is encountered (briefly share details).

The other park I would suggest exploring is located at the end of the peninsula. Forillon National Park was Quebec's first park, created in 1970. In addition to its beautiful coasts, the park also covers part of the hinterland. Here, during an organized excursion, I had the opportunity to see a black bear with two small cubs. I also enjoyed a short trail that took me to a beautiful waterfall. Walking along one of the park's beaches, I encountered a family of seals. These were easy excursions, but fascinating in their own way.
* Read the first book in a series OR read a book you found relaxing or easy to read (tell us why).
Day 9: Northern Quebec

The largest part of Quebec is also the least populated, covering the northern region up to Hudson Bay. The main sources of income are logging and mining, while tourism is practically nonexistent. It is home to the people of the Cree First Nation in the south and to the Inuit in the north. The most accessible region is the southernmost area known as Abitibi-Témiscamingue. You can hunt and fish in its many forests, numerous lakes, and waterways (they counted 22,000!). There are also several nature reserves in which to indulge in other outdoor activities such as hiking, kayaking, mountain biking, and snowshoeing and cross-country skiing in winter.
* Read a book with an indigenous character (tell us who) OR read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in ABITIBI TEMISCAMINGUE (3 word minimum).

The northernmost region of Nunavik is located between the Hudson Bay and Strait and is the least accessible of all. Its inhabitants almost all belong to the Inuit people. Here are two of the largest national parks in the entire North American continent, but the climate is particularly harsh given that we are now in the Arctic. If you dare to venture up here, be sure to learn about the Inuit people by visiting the Musée Daniel Weetaluktuk in Inukjuak, a village on the shores of Hudson Bay. What brings most tourists to the area, however, is the possibility of seeing the Northern Lights.
* Read a book set in a cold climate (tell us where) OR read a book with a night scene on the cover (post cover).
Day 10: Quebec Cuisine

The local cuisine is very influenced by French tradition. Some of the highlights are seafood-filled tourtières (meat pies), soupe aux pois (pea soup), tarte au sucre (sugar pie), and of course, crepes and French onion soup. But the one dish you must try is poutine: a plate of French fries, cheese curds, and gravy (usually made of flour and broth). You can find variations of it widespread in fast food chains and in restaurants dedicated to this specialty called poutineries. Today it is considered a national dish of all of Canada, but it was created in the 1950s in rural Quebec.
* Read a book tagged FOOD on its GR homepage OR read a book set in a restaurant or similar location (tell us where).

A Canadian product known throughout the world is maple syrup. A maple leaf is even found on the country's flag. A bottle of maple syrup is the typical Canadian souvenir to bring home, and the chances that it was produced in Quebec are very high, given that over 96% of the syrup comes from this region. Sugar shacks are very popular in Quebec. These rustic cabins, usually open between March and April, offer dishes made from maple syrup in a very friendly atmosphere. A favorite is tire sur la neige, a maple syrup taffy created by pouring hot maple syrup sap directly onto fresh snow, then served on long wooden sticks. Yum!!!
* Read a book with the word MAPLE or SYRUP found in its text (share text) OR read a book published in March or April of any year (share publication date).

3 Months from Start
Patrizia is taking us on a trip through one of Canada's largest provinces.
Quebec is the second largest province in Canada and where the memory of French domination (1534-1763) is still strong, so much so that its symbol is the fleur-de-lys, the symbol of the French crown. In fact, the whole country is bilingual, speaking both English and French, with French being the official language of two provinces, Quebec and New Brunswick. In this adventure we will be exploring Quebec via the St. Lawrence River. From personal experience, I can say that this trip is a paradise for both nature lovers and those who love historical sites. Enjoy the trip!

Day 1: Montreal
We begin our trip flying into Montreal, Canada's second largest city by population. The city sits on an archipelago located at the confluence of the St. Lawrence and Ottawa rivers and is Quebec's main cultural center. It is known for its Underground City (officially RÉSO), an extensive network of shopping arcades, hotels, offices, and more, all located beneath the city center where life takes place in the cold winter months. For lovers of history, I recommend a visit to Vieux-Montréal (Old Montreal), where you can admire many impressive historical buildings. Above all is the Notre Dame Basilica, reminiscent of Europe with its Gothic architecture. Mont-Royal Park, one of the most famous city parks, is also worth a visit.
* Read a book set in a large city (tell us where) OR read a book where the characters go underground (briefly share details).
In 1976 Montreal hosted the Summer Olympics, and the Olympic Park is worth a visit. The famous inclined tower, which was part of the Olympic Stadium, is the tallest inclined structure in the world. The glass-encased funicular takes visitors on a breathtaking two-minute ride to the top, offering views of the surrounding area. Also worth visiting are the Insectarium, Botanical Garden, Planetarium, and above all, the Biodome. The latter was built for the Olympics as a velodrome, but since 1992 it has hosted a replica of four ecosystems found in America: the tropical forest, the Laurentian Forest, the marine ecosystem of the St. Lawrence, and the sub-polar region.
* Read a book that features a sport as a key element to the plot (tell us how) OR read a book with a title that starts with a letter in BIODOME (ignore A, An or The).
Day 2: The St. Lawrence River
A trip to Quebec is characterized by the constant presence of the St. Lawrence River. It connects the Great Lakes to the Atlantic Ocean, and up to Montreal, it marks the border between Canada and the US. It progressively widens into the largest estuary in the world. The area was explored in 1524 by one of my fellow citizens, Giovanni da Verrazzano, although the first to have sailed into the Gulf of St. Lawrence was Jacques Cartier. You will see and hear his name often in Quebec because he was the first European to discover the area, and many monuments and parks are dedicated to him. As we travel down the river, keep your eyes peeled because you might spot some whales!
* Read a book where a North American river is named in the text (share name) OR read a book whose author's first and last initials can be found JACQUES CARTIER.
At one point the St. Lawrence is so wide that it becomes almost impossible to see the other bank. One of the things that amazed me most was seeing the effect of the ocean tides on the waterway. To guide sailors navigating these strong currents and tides, 43 lighthouses were built on the many islands and headlands of the river. There is an itinerary written that takes you on a trip to admire these sentinels of the sea: the Route des Phares (Road of Lighthouses).
* Read a book with a lighthouse on the cover or featured prominently in the plot (post cover or share details) OR read a book with 4 or 3 in its page count (share page count).
Day 3: Quebec City
The capital of the province is the city of the same name. Quebec City is the oldest city in North America, having been founded in 1608. For a short time it served as the capital of the country before it was moved to Ottawa. The historic section of the city, characterized by steep streets, is dominated by its most famous monument, the Château Frontenac, which was the subject of one of our previous Landmark challenges found HERE. Overall, Quebec City resembles a European city more than an American one. It should be remembered that one of the oldest universities on the continent, that of Laval, is also located here.
* Read a book tagged HISTORICAL on its GR Homepage OR read a book that completes one of the tasks in the Le Château Frontenac Landmark Challenge (click on link).
While in Quebec City, be sure to take in the changing of the guard held in the Citadel courtyard. It is an impressive ceremony. It is also worth taking a trip to Montmorency Falls, which is taller than the famous Niagara Falls. The falls flow directly into the St. Lawrence River and are clearly visible thanks to a bridge that crosses them. Also near the city is the Sainte-Anne Canyon, which can be admired thanks to various observation points and three suspension bridges. Both of these natural beauties are located within a thirty-minute drive of the city and deserve to be included in our visit.
* Read a book where the MC takes a sight-seeing excursion (briefly share details) OR read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in MONTMORENCY FALLS (3 word min).
Day 4: Tadoussac
Along the banks of the St. Lawrence River, there are several very charming small towns or villages where you can spend your holidays or stay to explore the surrounding area. One of the best known is Tadoussac, which rises at the confluence of the St. Lawrence and Saguenay rivers. Precisely because of its position, this was Canada's first commercial hub where furs were mainly traded. In the 19th century it became a popular tourist center where many holiday villas were built. Thanks to the proximity to various protected areas, tourism is still the main activity today.
* Read a book set in the 19th century OR read a book whose MC's first name starts with a letter in TADOUSSAC (share name).
The most popular activity in Tadoussac is whale watching. The St. Lawrence River and its tributary, the Saguenay, are home to around twenty species of marine mammals, including the beluga whale. Let me tell you about my experience. On a dinghy in the St. Lawrence River, I saw my first whales, despite the foggy day. Almost a quarter of a century later, the sound emitted by the cetaceans using their blowholes to breathe remains etched in my memory. In the midst of the fog we first heard their blowing and only then spotted the whales: it was so exciting!
* Read a book with the word DINGHY, FOGGY or WHALE found in its text (share text) OR read a book by an author with at least 20 published books (include author link).
Day 5: Saguenay River Fjord
The Saguenay River is one of the most important tributaries of the St. Lawrence River. In the final part of its course, it flows into a beautiful fjord, where the influence of the ocean tides is greatly felt. In its waters, it is quite easy to spot the aforementioned beluga, also known as the "white dolphin." The confluence with the St. Lawrence River is home to Canada's first marine park, established in 1998. In addition to marine animals, it also protects various species of birds.
* Read a book with a title printed in WHITE on its cover (post cover) OR read a book whose title starts with a letter in FJORD (ignore A, An or The).
Saguenay also gives its name to a region, together with Lac-St-Jean, which is characterized by having its own rich and diverse culture that includes spiritual traditions, Indigenous heritage, and festivals. The inhabitants are actually known for using expressions unknown to other French speakers. If you decide to hike along one of the many paths available, pay attention to the waterways. With a bit of luck, you might see some beavers at work. The area is rich in forests and lakes, and fishing is a favorite activity among tourists (remember to get a license!). During the winter the Saguenay River can freeze, allowing for ice fishing.
* Read a book that introduces you to a new culture different than your own (briefly share how) OR read a book where a character goes fishing (briefly share details).
