Set in 17th century England, this is the story of Martha Hallybread, an herbalist, midwife and servant caught in the witch hunts of that era. It gives us frightening insights into the unwarranted persecution and torture of the accused. Martha is a loyal, kind person who does her best to help others. At first I wondered whether this was an appropriate book for me to read; although she secretly carries around a type of voodoo doll that she discovered amongst her mother's things, she doesn't participate in any occult practices. There are some mysterious, supernatural elements, though.

I questioned the use of several f-bombs in a work about this era. Although there are no sex scenes, there are some descriptions of the female body (made during the examination of the accused "witches".
