A little about the Book
When Cy Bellman, American settler and widowed father of Bess, reads in the newspaper that huge ancient bones have been discovered in a Kentucky swamp, he leaves his small Pennsylvania farm and young daughter to find out if the rumours are true: that the giant monsters are still alive, and roam the uncharted wilderness beyond the Mississippi River.

West is the story of Bellman's journey and of Bess, waiting at home for her father to return.

Looking forward to everyone’s active participation and fun discussion.

Cpt. Disco (captaindisco) | 24 comments Last month I read Clear by Carys Davies and I LOVED it. The way this author writes is so beautiful and humble. It felt like I'm reading a painting that has been put into words. Cannot wait to get my hands on this book as well.

Cpt. Disco (captaindisco) | 24 comments Ugh, really want to read this but won't be able to this month as I cannot afford it at the moment, and the book is not available locally in my country. Will get to it next month after payday.

It's almost 2 am here in India and I stayed up to complete reading this book and was able to finally get some reading done.

As for this book, I would say the story was well written. I found myself drawn to Bess's story more than to the adventure of Cy Bellman. Bess's wait, her longing for her fathers return and how she spends for days without him was heartwarming. As for the story of Bellman it read more to me like some child like adventure and was just okay for me.
Though, 65 to 70% of the book is slow paced, the remaining 20 to 25% did feel rushed as if the author sudden realised it was a short book.

Overall, this was a good read.

Waiting to read everyone thoughts.

♥ Sandi ❣ | 143 comments I felt that this read like most novellas. It rushed in places, was drug out in places and the ending came to quickly and in my opinion with novellas was not a good ending. The whole premise of the book was absurd - other than to show mans need for adventure and following his dreams at any cost.

I probably liked the Indian boy the most ( sorry can't remember his name - too many other books since). (view spoiler)

The Indian was okay in his own way but i still have my doubts (view spoiler) And his name was old woman from a distance, quite an unusually and funny name🤣

♥ Sandi ❣ | 143 comments Yes that is right. No wonder I could not remember his name...lol!

Toni | 39 comments I loved this novella. Would never have read it if not for this book group. What other books have you got lurking on your shelves Sandi that I need to be reading?
I’m thinking this was a road trip story mostly about dealing with grief. I thought the ending was satisfactory and believe that Bess and her Aunt might have a chance of a reasonably fulfilled life.

♥ Sandi ❣ | 143 comments LOL! Toni - I have over 3000 books in this house and go on the hunt for novellas for this group.
