Rachel | 280 comments I love me a good wetland, or any wetland really, and so when I saw Annie Proulx had a book about peatlands I knew we had to read it! Annie Proulx has written some of my favorite historical fiction books so I'm interested to dig into her nonfiction work. Blurb copied from Thriftbooks - "A lifelong acolyte of the natural world, Annie Proulx brings her witness and research to the subject of wetlands and the vitally important role they play in preserving the environment--by storing the carbon emissions that accelerate climate change. Fens, bogs, swamps, and marine estuaries are crucial to the earth's survival, and in four illuminating parts, Proulx documents their systemic destruction in pursuit of profit." Enjoy and let us know what you think!

Rachel | 280 comments I finished it. 3 stars! A bit rambling in spots but overall very good and I learned a few things about wetlands worldwide. This book was published in 2023, and it ends with talking about the Mid Barataria Sediment Diversion, a large coastal restoration project in Louisiana, though she doesn't mention the project by name. I'm sad to report that Louisiana's governor shut that project down. Politico just released a good write about with lots of content about coastal wetlands loss, the diversion project, the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. Links get weird here but I'm copying it over anyway: https://www.politico.com/news/2025/08...
