Mimi | 2 comments I first got this book when I was around five or so years old from a scholastic book fair in Michigan. It contained a series of short stories that were in the style of fairy tales, most of which centered around some kind of princess. I remember a lot of the stories involving some over-looked step-daughter saving the day.

The story I remember best was called The Little Black Box and it was about a young princess with three older step-sisters who were generally mean to her. She liked to dance with the shadows because she couldn't go to the ball. One night, an old witch gave her sisters a magic box that granted wishes and would only work if all of them were allowed to use it. The oldest stepsister wished to marry a man with power, the middle stepsister wished to marry a man who could dance, and the youngest stepsister wished for chocolate? I think and then broke the box to the MC couldn't use it. The protagonist pieced it back together wished for the shadows to come to life.
SPOILER: Turns out the shadows were people under a curse and she had freed them, She ends up marrying the shadow prince and her stepsisters get cursed versions of their wishes for being mean.

The book had a slightly textured hard cover that was a solid, sort of robin's egg blue color, and it had black and white illustrations inside that were consistently by the same person.
