A group has a magic talisman/symbol that looks like a Celtic knot and when they focus on it they can travel to other versions of earth. There is a smuggling ring that uses this to aid their operations. At one point in the series they discover a second alternate reality because someone loses their talisman, rewrites it, but gets a line wrong. This second reality has major steampunk vibes.
Read about 5-6 years ago. Not sure how old the book is.
