As stated in the title, this book covers only 3 days. Gail Baines is looking forward to her daughter's wedding in just three days. Today is the day her daughter, Debbie, goes to the spa with her bridesmaids, but Gail is working in the private school where she is Assistant Headmistress. First thing in the morning, the Headmistress, Marilee, calls Gail in and tells her that she is retiring before school starts up again in September. Gail expects that she will be named the new Headmistress, but Marilee tells her that the board has chosen someone from outside who will bring in her own Assistant. Gail is hurt and angry, so she walks out of the school and quits. Gail is 61 and has to decide what she will do now. A day that should be happy is now painful.
The story is short and moves right along. Tyler is excellent at character-driven novels, and this is no exception. We are introduced to Gail's former husband, Max. They've been divorced for years, but they are friendly if not friends. We also met her mother, her daughter, her future son-in-law, the parents of the groom, and other relatives. Along the way, we learn more of Gail's history.
This is a lovely story well narrated with the perfect voice, pacing, and tone. It's a quick read or listen that is just packed with interesting characters.
