I originally partnered with her through the free beta reading thread before she made the transition to paid services, but I am commenting here as well to share my experience!
She caught several grammatical errors that many other readers missed during both my first and second drafts, citing her sources for issues that might require further reading and research.
She is a very fast reader and was the first to send feedback for my third draft, and gave me her honest opinion about a major structural issue that I am excited to fix. Most readers who are trying to make the transition to paid reading will only provide glowing feedback, as they're worried about a bad review. Her sincerity is a rare and valuable find!
Provided that you're an author who can accept criticism and are willing to put in the work to improve your manuscript, Ellen will be a great fit for you! She truly cares about making the story the best it can be.
She took notes on pacing, plot, and characters, as well as other issues that I personally requested feedback on. She communicates quickly, clearly, and professionally! She also pointed out a privacy concern with the way I originally sent my manuscript link, and I am very thankful for that!
Thank you again Ellen!
My offer is simple: $.01/word with the first 15k words free to earn your confidence.
My experience at this time is limited to 20 manuscripts, and I’m expanding rapidly. Until now, I’ve been working pro bono here on Goodreads and elsewhere doing beta and proofreading. I’ve received great reviews on my proofreading, which you can find on my free beta thread here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
My tools thus far are MS Word, GoogleDocs, epub readers, Merriam-Webster and The Chicago Manual of Style. Any tools you require or suggest are fine, so long as they’re free and I can comment inline within the manuscript.
My favorite reads include historical fiction, fantasy, and sci-fi. I love comic books as well.
The theme and use of language can be anything at all. I was born and raised in a very large city and am fairly well traveled, so I tend toward interest or amusement rather than taking offense or passing judgement.
In addition to an outstanding command of English, I have sufficient background in Spanish to have beta and proofread a friend's Spanish-to-English translation of her novel.
