Readers and Reading discussion

I am re-posting this from a folder I am deleting

To post a message, please decide which of the folders is the appropriate one for whatever it is that you want to write. Current FOLDERS include Fiction, Non-fiction, BookNookPeople Miscellany, Monthly Reads, Reading Cookbooks etc. and are on the Readers and Reading home page.

1-Open the folder in which you wish to post.

2-Decide if you want to comment on a previous "topic" or add a new topic.

3-If you want to comment on a previous topic, click on that topic. A page will open up with the old comments and at the bottom of the old comments, you will see a box in which to type.

OR-OR-OR

4-If, instead, you want to ADD a topic, click on NEW TOPIC which is slightly to the right and above the list of current topics. A page will open up and you will need to type in your new topic's name and then the comment in the box under that.

5- Click on POST to enter your comment.

JoAnn, thank you for your conscience work on behalf of this board. I know i'd be lost without the work you do on this board.

You are welcome Deborah. I really like doing this, but just wish it were easier for everyone to post here. I keep looking for easier ways and there just do not seem to be any. I think GR is particularly difficult for people like myself - I was used to reading the AOL boards unthreaded, so to fit a post into a thread is annoying to me.

I appreciate your work too, JoAnn. I don't think posting on GR is hard at all. I was a 'threaded' person, so maybe that's why? :o)

I was thinking, maybe we should all try to invite a friend or two we know who likes books but hasn't discovered GR to join us?

Thanking JoAnn ahead of time.
The last three years of teaching have severed my board time into non-existence. Don't give up on us, the tried and true-bloods of posting notoriety and infamy from the nineties and early 2000's. I just have absolutely no time in 08 and 09 to enjoy posts to the fullest and post myself. It is rare when I can even open up on email to enjoy a comment.

Thanks for contributing all that you do, everyone. I certainly appeciate your efforts. PS My DH retired this year. Perhaps I'll follow soon.

Good idea, Donna. I just sent e-mails to 16 book-loving people. Maybe a couple of them will join us.

JoAnn, I've been thinking about this board and why I don't visit it as much as I did the AOL boards. I think that because the boards aren't as easy to manipulate, fewer folders would make it easier. Perhaps one cookbook folder, one for book talk, one for general talk--something like that? I always read AOL threaded, but it was easier to mark threads as read than it is here. I think I could convert to unthreaded if I put my mind to it!

I really do appreciate your work here--if you hadn't taken the initiative, we probably all would have faded away. I've been reading Fav Fic since the 1990s, and I know that my reading choices have greatly benefited.

Karla, the way GoodReads is set up, there are folders and then there are topics within the folders.

Unfortunately, one cannot post directly into a folder, but must post under a topic.

In other words, we can have a folder entitled "Reading Cookbooks" (same as its name on AOL) but you cannot post to that folder without a topic (think of it as a sub-folder).

I would say...post whatever you want, wherever you want...it will be found and read!

Karla, once you open a thread, look to the right side of the page near the Search Posts box. Under that you will see Unread Topics. Just click on that for a list of the unread threads. After each thread that you read, go back again and click Unread topics. When you are done reading the topics that are interest you, look at the bottom of the page and you can mark the rest of the threads read. It really is quite easy once you get use to GR.

Having Folders with various Threads helps us to organize the board in such a manner that people can read the Folders and Topics within a folder that interests them. For example, if you are not interested in TV programs you can just skip that Folder/Threads. It also makes it easy to go back and find a particular post. Perhaps for a book title that you want or recipe.

Is there a way to mark a thread "read" without actually going into it--to reduce the clutter on my screen? It may be OCD, but I feel compelled to mark all as read so they don't show up!

Karla, click on UNREAD to the right of the words "discussion board" on the main Readers and Reading page.

A new page will open, containing a list of all the unread topics, with red words indicating how many posts are in each topic.

At the bottom of this list it says "mark all as read". Click on that and that should work for you.
