Kathryn (sscarllet) | 271 comments Can anyone suggest a book that has a sad, but still heartwarming and some how just right feeling ending? Maybe something like the end of one of these:

The Thirteenth Tale
Stones from the River
Two Brothers

Sorry to be terribly vague.

Also, you have to read the whole series for it to make sense, but I thought these books had a beautiful yet sad ending. The Infernal Devices: Clockwork Angel; Clockwork Prince; Clockwork Princess

PS - I haven't read I Heard the Owl Call my Name in decades. I remember loving it, though.

Good example - so sad, yet you feel very enriched when you're finished with it.

Maybe The Bridge of San Luis Rey? I haven't read it yet but from what I've heard, it seems to fit.

Kathy | 56 comments Balthazar Jones and the Tower of London Zoo (U.S. title: The Tower, the Zoo, and the Tortoise)

The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry

The version of Great Expectations with its author's intended ending--this Signet Classics paperback has it.

Michele | 2488 comments You don't mention if you're looking for romance, YA, fantasy, lit fic, or something else, so I'll throw out a few of my favorites in several genres:

The Unlikely Ones
Skellig
The Fionavar books, starting with The Summer Tree (there are at least three places where I *always* cry in these even though I know what's coming)
The Rhinoceros Who Quoted Nietzsche and Other Odd Acquaintances (the title story, o the title story)
Stories of Your Life and Others (again, the title story...)
Watership Down

And finally, a classic chilren's book: The Velveteen Rabbit

Railyn (funky-rat) | 243 comments It's a go-to suggestion for me frequently, but it fits so many different requests.

Things don't go so well for some of the main character's friends, but I still felt fairly good about it at the end:

The Outsiders

Hillary | 270 comments The Quaker Café is one I just finished reading, realized as I was nearing the ending that I was going to start crying, and as I was eating in a public place waited until I got home.
The Storied Life of A. J. Fikry: A Novel also has a tearful, beautiful ending.

Netta | 26 comments My Sister's KeeperNot sure if you would consider this heartwarming but definitely heart-wrenching and an ending that needed to happen in the context of the story.
