I'm a graphic designer by trade (writing is still in the "hobby" stage : )) but I'm not sure about "not breaking the bank" for the software. I use the Adobe products: Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. I think there are limited versions of Photoshop out there for not too much money - not sure about the others. It kinda depends on what kinds of graphics you want to do.
