Hello,

I am starting a new way of having books suggested to the group and selecting books to vote on for each month. First, you will notice the books above are numbered. Second, they are in alphabetical order (I hope, for the most part!). Each month I will go to this site:

http://www.mdani.demon.co.uk/p...

and tell it to select 10 numbers, randomly, between 1 to X (being the number of books here) and no duplicate numbers. Those ten numbers will select the ten books we will pick from. Two weeks before the first of the month I will do this, post the books and allow members here to explain why they would suggest or not suggest certain books among them in a topic in this folder. On the first day of each month I will post the poll and a week or so later we will have 3 new books!

Also, I am asking everyone to now suggest books in this way:

Book by Author

THEY MUST HAVE BOTH and BE IN THIS FORMAT! It takes a long time to search down books just threw in here by title or, Lord forbid, "that alien book from Heinlein". Those I ignore :-p Being in college, I need some help in getting these lined up. The format above is easy to add to the list and I ask suggestions in this Monthly Book Suggestions folder be in this way. I have also created a Member's Suggestion Folder so we can suggest books not necessarily to read together or discuss our suggestions more. If you wish to suggest something here and discuss it I ask that you do the discussion in that folder so I can easily add entries and not miss any!

Also, once I add an entry to the list I will delete that post from the thread to keep it orderly. Please also check the list and not post entries already suggested.

Thanks!
Nick

Mark (markterencechapman) My paranormal sci-fi/detective novel, "Sunrise Destiny", has been nominated for a 21010 EPIC Award. (Winners to be announce in March 2010.) And it's already receiving rave reviews.

"Sunrise Destiny" is available from both Amazon.com and Fictionwise.com. It's currently only available in ebook form; but that includes PDF, which is readable on any PC--no expensive ebook reader needed. (Print is coming, but I don't have a date yet.) Best of all, it's on sale at Fictionwise for only $3.00 (half-price) at the moment.

You can read a 4,000-word excerpt on my website: http://markterencechapman.com

Patricio | 14 comments I would like to recommend the "The shadow of the torturer " from The book of the new sun " by Gene Wolfe. This book has a lot of hints, symbols, writers tributes, and I thimk is ideal for a discussion

message 44: by Sean (new)

Sean Little (seanpatricklittle) If I can be narcissistic enough to suggest my book:
THE SEVEN
It's a sci-fi tale of seven teenagers subjected to genetic experimentation to turn them into superheroes. If you like Patterson's "Maximum Ride" series or Marvel Comics' "Runaways"--you'll dig on this book.
www.seanpatricklittle.com for more info.

message 45: by Steven (new)

Steven (Stevinski09) | 3 comments I think you have to include the first two books of the "river world series by Philip Jose Farmer. The first book is excellent and the second I would rate as good.

message 46: by Peter (new)

Peter | 44 comments I second that recommendation. "Shadow of the Torturer" is incredibly literate, and as you said rich in signs and symbols. Gene Wolfe creates a fantastic, plausible future world.

message 48: by Bryan (new)

Bryan (blyoung) | 19 comments Secret Passages by Paul Preuss

Somebody please second this... it's a great book, sadly overlooked. Although it's not your typical SF-type novel, I do believe there's enough SF-ness in it to qualify for this club.

Here's a review webpage:
http://www.sfsite.com/11a/sec20.htm

message 49: by Joanna (new)

Joanna | 1 comments Post-Human by David Simpson is excellent.

message 50: by Candiss (new)

Candiss (tantara) China Mountain Zhang by Maureen F. McHugh has won just about every award out there, yet it's woefully underappreciated. It's near-future sci-fi with both bite and social relevance. I have only read a bit of it, yet I'm quite impressed, and I've heard nothing but positive input from others.
