Diane U (djuseless) I have downloaded several free kindle books. Have you read any of them? Any comments?

message 2: by Fred (new)

Fred (fredhanselmann) | 6 comments I've read two free Kindle books recently. Both were pretty good.

Monday Night Jihad by Steve Yohn
Vanish by Tom Pawlik

Mary E. (jujjy) | 8 comments I've downloaded just about every free Kindle book I've come across. I've read a few so far, but the one I most enjoyed was Blood Engines by T.A. Pratt. It inspired me to read the entire series. Excellent, if you appreciate a good urban fantasy.

message 4: by Diane U (new)

Diane U (djuseless) What about The Angel Experiment by James Patterson? I like his adult books so this young adult series has sparked my interest.

message 5: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Orlich Ahern (kittymeowxcore) I've found a few free ones, but the only one I read was "Darkfever" by Karen Marie Moning.

Pamela (pamela128) | 4 comments Already Dead

I just read the above and I really liked it. The foul language was perfect for my taste! I will be purchasing the rest of this series!

The Angel Experiment has been downloaded and will eventually read.

Download them all, doesn't hurt!

Abigail (42stitches) | 23 comments I am not the one who purchases the books, so I never know how much they cost. But if I recall properly, Naomi Novik's first Temeraire novel was a freebie. but I just looked it up and it seems now that they have gain popularity, they are charging about six dollars for it.

I keep meaning to scour the freebie pages and pick some things out on my own, but it is sort of a hassle as my whispernet does not function. Or maybe I'm just too lazy X)

Kip Williams (kipwilliams) | 6 comments As far as free books go, I'm using the Kindle to finally read the classics I've always wanted to but never quite got around to. Finished the Iliad, Aristotle's Poetics, The Art Of War, and just started Don Quixote. I downloaded The Canterbury Tales and have started it a couple of times but have to admit, I may never finish it.

Ralph Gallagher | 327 comments Mod
I've read a couple of them. Soul Identity was really good. I read Maximum Ride in paperback a couple years ago, and loved it. Like Kip, I've also read quite a few classics - Mark Twain, Shakespeare, Poe and others. (Mostly for school) I'm really glad I bought a Kindle. =D

Sarah | 43 comments I'm all about the Kindle freebies. If you keep your eye on the Kindle Bestsellers, you can always see the new ones they post for free, because everyone starts buying them and they go right to the top! Here's the link (right now, 18 of the top 25 are free):

http://www.amazon.com/gp/bestsellers/...

I agree with Already Dead - download them all. I've downloaded literally hundreds of free books. I remove them from my device so they are just sitting on Amazon waiting for me to get around to them. Even though I'll probably never read all of them, I still like having them there.

I assume you're asking about the newer freebies, not the public domain ones. Here are some I liked (though some are not free anymore):
The Keeper - this one was EXCELLENT
Kiss of Midnight
Dark Lover
Paranoia
The Briar King
(All of these except Paranoia are the first in a series, and I ended up buying and reading the rest of them. Amazon is like the book pusher in that regard - first one's free, then you gotta pay for the rest!)

Some that were "meh":
Giving Chase
72 Hours
House of Danger

And some that aren't worth your time:
Full Moon Rising
Weaving Words

Awesomevegan (AKA JenReads) (awesomevegan) | 109 comments I have downloaded many free books on Kindle. I grab them up while I can since they don't always STAY free. I have some that I got for free but are abut 7 dollars now. :) Sometimes you surprise yourself and find a really good one. I love supernatural themed books (vampires, werewolves etc) and have found lots in that genre for free. Right now I am reading Hotter After Midnight I didn't like it much at first but I am getting more into it. I also have gotten into some new series through free first books. Like The Angel Experiment I need to read the rest of those since I thought it was very interesting :) I don't know if these are still free.

message 12: by Liz (new)

Liz (busy91) Yes I have read a few, the ones I've read so far are the classics. I've enjoyed them. I've downloaded a few current free titles too, but haven't gotten to them yet.

message 13: by Anthony (new)

Anthony | 4 comments I downloaded Conspiracy in Kiev and Already Dead.

Already Dead is the real steal. A quality author in Charlie Huston. I have read his Caught Stealing trilogy and loved it. Already Dead is the first of his Joe Pitt series that I have been looking forward to reading for a while. When I saw it for free I was fired up! From what I have heard Charlie will be releasing future books for free via Kindle so be on the look out.

Conspiracy in Kiev is not bad so far. A pretty good pot boiler. I am not familiar with the author but so far very enjoyable.

stormhawk | 542 comments I regularly check the Kindle Store for free downloads. I just (over)downloaded a batch of public domain classics this morning based on a suggested that amazon search gave me, and I enjoy checking out the new authors. So far only one of the freebies has been so bad that I stopped reading it and deleted it off of my Kindle.

message 15: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 43 comments Which one?

message 16: by stormhawk (new)

stormhawk | 542 comments The MOST AWFULEST BOOK EVER is ... The Brass Bed - Jennifer Stephenson.

Up until this book I would say, "Once I start reading something I'm stuck, I have to finish it."

I just plain stopped and deleted this one!

~~~~~
Although it's a completely transparent marketing ploy, a lot of publishers are offering the first book of a series free, in hopes that you'll get hooked and buy the rest. I just read Wit'ch Fire and may try the next one. ont entirely sure yet, I have too many other books on my to-read list.
message 17: by Sarah (new)
Sarah | 43 comments Ugh - ditto on that one. Couldn't get past the first 20 pages or so. What a waste of time!
Absolutely agree! That was the only one of the freebies that I couldn't finish, too.
Diane U (djuseless) I was just afraid that these were a lesser quality of literature. I just wanted to make sure they were worth my reading time! Lots of the ones I downloaded on Christmas are now regular price so I guess they aren't "discount" books!
With my new kindle for Christmas, my hubby gave me $50 to spend on new books too. I have only used $9.99 to buy the 4th Twilight book. With all these freebies, that money may last longer than I thought.
Oh no, Diane. They are not really lesser quality. Some that I have gotten for free were really good reads. :) Sometimes they are the first in the series (to get you hooked) or a new author to promote them. There are also a lot of classics available. Your money will last longer than you thought :)
Diane U (djuseless) That is so good to hear! I have been checking the Kindle Store's bestsellers twice a day so I do not miss out on any new freebies!!
Right now I am half way throught Midnight Sun (Twilight #5) that I had converted from PDF (I did this before I upgraded my K2). I am trying to decide if I want to read some of my freebies next or purchase The Host by Stephenie Meyer. Any recommendations?
Go with the freebies! The Host was horribly written. (And I enjoyed Twilight)
I recommend Books on the Knob blog for keeping track of freebies and discounts. You set it up as an RSS feed.
Karen | 60 comments I just finished Magic Kingdom for Sale:Sold by Terry Brooks which was free a while back. It was OK, I saw a lot of comparison to Lord of the Rings and other fantasy books, some passages were really good.
Amazon sells the first three books in the series in one for $9.99
May of last year I downloaded Serial by Jack Kilborn and Blake Crouch. It's more of a short story than a novel- but I still thoroughly enjoyed it. I also liked how the two wrote the story. Basically it's written into three parts: one author wrote the first part, the other writing the second, then they both collaborated on the third part. I believe it's still a freebie on amazon.
Also have Already Dead by Huston and can't wait to start it!
Recently downloaded my first freebie - A STUDY IN SCARLET by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The new Sherlock Holmes movie inspired me to add it to my Kindle, but I've only read a bit so far. Got distracted when I read the sample for THE SECRET LIFE OF CEECEE WILKES by Diane Chamberlain, which pulled me right in!
I enjoyed the The Host but it takes a while to get into. I would say wait a bit and see if the price goes down and in the meantime read some freebies or inexpensive books. I cannot remember what price The Host was the last time I checked. I have it already in hardcover. If you are looking for something in that category I can try to help you find something cheaper or free :)
message 28: by Diane U (new)
Diane U (djuseless) Thanks for the offer but I have been buying cheap kindle downloads like crazy lately. I just finished Midnight Sun and I started Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult last night at the recommendation of a friend.
Take a look at some of the under $2 books I have found over on this thread:
Bec (bheitbaum) | 2 comments I'm new to this group so apologies if I'm repeating what has already been said...
I have downloaded tons of free Kindle books - I regularly check Amazon for free books. I've learnt pretty quickly to download the freebies as soon as you see them because they don't stay free! Mileage varies - some are great and some are awful! But, they are free so nothing to lose and you may just stumble across a gem :-)
And don't forget that there are hundreds of "classics" available for free!
I have 225 books sitting on my Kindle atm & all but 2 were absolutely free... They should keep me busy for a while!
message 30: by Cathy (last edited Jan 15, 2010 01:25PM) (new)
Cathy | 42 comments I have a lot of free classics, but a most of the free newer books seem to be romance novels, evangelical Christian, series fantasy, or self-published, none of which greatly interest me. I do wish I'd had my Kindle in time to get His Majesty's Dragon free -- I've heard those are tons of fun.
I did get the "going gray" freebie last week -- I suspect it will be annoyingly narcissistic, but I can always delete if I don't like it!
message 31: by BookAddict (new)
BookAddict (bookaddictgirrl) | 26 comments I'm using the memory card in my Kindle to download as many of the public domain classics that I can. Especially fun was the Christmas series by Charles Dickens (Cricket on the Hearth, Christmas Carol, etc.) that I found on Feedbooks.
message 32: by Bec (new)
Bec (bheitbaum) | 2 comments I'm currently on a "Free eBook Read-A-Thon" on my Kindle.
So far, I have read "Serial" by Jack Kilborn, Crime Scene At Cardwell Ranch, Dancing In The Moonlight, The Angel Experiment, Dark Pursuit and a ton of "classics" - and have a lot of other free ebooks from Amazon, Smashwords, ManyBooks (and some other sites I've come across) waiting for me.
At the moment I'm reading Exposure: A Novel.
I have enjoyed all of them so far, with the exception of Serial - it just missed the mark and was too short and not quite the gripping serial-killer story I hoped it would be. The Harlequin romances are exactly that - a good (if you like that sort of thing), easy, quick, light read.
I'll post ratings & short reviews of the free Kindle books I read as I finish them, so keep an eye on my bookshelves!
message 33: by Karen (new)
Karen | 4 comments I recently read Murder Takes the Cake
by Gayle Trent which was free...a quick fun read...I quite liked it!!
message 34: by Jaimie (new)
Jaimie (jnj777) | 9 comments I got my Kindle for Christmas and so far I have downloaded 4 or 5 free books and read 2 of them. They were as good as books I'd pay for. I check the ratings on the free books though and I've only downloaded ones that are 4 or 5 stars. I look every few days to see what books they are offering for free because sometimes books that cost 8 or 9 bucks will be free for a limited time.
Can I just say that I LOVE MY KINDLE!!!
Jaimie
Cookiesue9x (cookiesue) | 6 comments I would never have read, let alone, bought "The Shunning", but, I downloaded it free from Amazon. Really liked it and intend to read more, it reminds me of the Jan Karon "Fr Tim" books, sweet books, that are a nice respite after what I usually read.
