Lisa | 196 comments Starting out slow for the new year
1. The Lace Reader by Brunonia Barry
I liked this one for it's references to the making of lace itself not so much for the witchcraft portions. That is sort of a background, little mentioned part of the book, but which I took a philosophical attitude toward.

2. Tropical kiss by Jan Coffey
this was a little too much of a teen romance novel for me, but know that if I had read it at 18 instead of 38 I would have liked it a little better.

The Lace Reader wasn't a favorite of mine either, for those very reasons.

I saw the movie years ago and didn't like it but since the book is usually always better I gave it a try. still wasn't amazing but I liked it better than I expected.

Lisa | 196 comments 4. Deja Dead by Kathy Reichs
really the only tv show I watch is Bones so I had to give the books that inspired it a try. Yet another series I'm hooked on now.

Lisa | 196 comments 5. Three to Get Deadly by Janet Evanovich
I just started the series last year so I'm way behind the latest book. Love the series not this particular one as much though.

Lisa | 196 comments 6. Blue Water by A. Manette Ansay
emotionally painful to read

I'm right about where you are! I read one then read a bunch of others in betweeen the next! At this rate I'll have them all read by oooh 2020! lol They are fun light reads to settle in with after a classic or harder reading.

Lisa | 196 comments 7. A great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray
ended up enjoying this one. I wanted to read it for a long time, but didn't know it was a gothic twist to historical fiction until I picked it up.

Lisa | 196 comments 8. High Five by Janet Evanovich
Still catching up in this series and wondering why I never read them earlier. Very fun read.

L, I love Janet Evanovich! Isn't she just good fun?

message 12: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 196 comments Definitely Andrea! I am so hooked on those books.

Lisa | 196 comments 9. Alice I Have Been by Melanie Benjamin
I didn't realize Alice in Wonderland was based on a real little girl or that the story behind the story was so heartbreaking. Alice in Wonderland would be so much different to read after reading this book.

message 14: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 196 comments 10. Around the world in Eighty days by Jules Verne.

message 15: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 196 comments 11. The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold
Didn't enjoy this book as much as all the hype suggested to me.

L, I hate when big hype ruins a book for a reader. I loved The Lovely Bones when it came out many years ago, but I can see how you might feel it was just okay.

Lisa | 196 comments 12. Eucalyptus: A NovelBy Murray Bail.
A little hard getting started but a good story once I got into it.

message 18: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 196 comments 13. Four to Score by Janet Evanovich. I read 4 and 5 out of order because I had a hard time finding #4 but I do love that series.

I love this series too L!

Lisa | 196 comments 14. The Girl with the Dragon TattooBy Stieg Larsson.
Loved this book, it definately lived up to all the great reviews I have read about it.

message 21: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 196 comments 15.American Gods by Neil Gaiman
not my favorite Gaiman book so far.

message 22: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 196 comments 16. Kentucky Rich by Fern Michaels
I live near where this novel is set so this time of the year (near Derby Days) is the perfect time to read this. I wish I would have enjoyed it a little more.

Lisa | 196 comments 17. At Home in Mitford by Jan Karon
just when I start to really get into reading life gets crazy, and I have to push reading to a back burner. This book was perfect for the time I read it...a very comforting and easy read.

I love this series for that very reason. Sometimes you just need a gentle comforting read. The Number One Ladies Detective series by Alexander McCall Smith is another series that does the same for me.

Lisa | 196 comments 18. Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro

Lisa | 196 comments 19. The Family Bones by Kimberly Raiser

Lisa | 196 comments 20. In the Season of the Sun by Kerry Newcomb an unexpected good read out of the stacks of paperbacks my mother in law passes on to me. I usually just skim through them and pass them on to someone else.

message 28: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 196 comments 21.Deep Down by Karen Harper

message 29: by Lisa (last edited May 29, 2010 01:56PM) (new)

Lisa | 196 comments 22. His Robot Girlfriend by Wesley Allison a great futuristic, yet very believable sci-fi e-book even if you don't usually read sci-fi. It is a very readable look at what happens when technolgy literally tries to take over the world.

message 30: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 196 comments 23.Life's a Beach by Claire Cook

message 31: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 196 comments 24. Outlander by Diana Gabaldon
this was a re read for me but it is one of the few books I could read over and over again.

I love the mitford series, it's like Chicken soup in reading form, comfort food in pages! lol

My thoughts exactly Joy!

Lisa | 196 comments 25. Killing Floor by Lee Child. I was sceptical about it for the first bit, but was soon sucked in and found it to be the page turner that was recommended so well to me. Caution to the more delicate sensibilities readers out there. (won't recommend this to my mother) the action can get to be a little brutal, the revenge scenes a little over the top, and most would agree to be too harsh.

Such a comfort read! I love that series so much!

message 44: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 196 comments 35. Dragonfly in Amber by Diana Gabaldon
Such a great series of books with characters I will think about long after I finish the series.

message 46: by Andrea, Moderator (new)

Andrea | 4456 comments Mod
L, what did you think of Freedom?

message 47: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 196 comments I liked Freedom in the beginning, the story was a page turner but it's the kind of story that made me want to take it slow for all the deeper meanings. For example freedom to one person may not be for someone else. It was long, and the characters were hard to love... and I like to care about the characters in books which in this book was difficult.

Decided I like her writing as Sophie Kinsella best.
