The Next Best Book Club discussion

Please post your questions here if you want to read something you would not normally read, but want to find a way to touch a shelf. So if you normally stick young adult, but are looking for a sci-fi that would touch a lot of shelves you can ask here.
*Please note this is optional... if you want to see if you can do it without suggestions, up to you.

This thread is also for each participant report the Title, Author, shelf, and our star rating for each book we read. That way people could look at our log and try to decide whether they wanted to read the book or not.

Just my own personal suggestion, if you join the seasonal challenge by Cynthia, you would be sure to read all kinds of genres that may up your shelving power!!

I got the OTHER shelf by reading Hot Mama... It's REALLY cheesy, so be prepared!

I got Indonesia by read Boy in Stripped Pajamas.

I got the dash (-) by reading The Time Machine by H.G. Wells. It'll also give you all the science fiction related shelves in only 86 pages!

for those who don't read a lot of science fiction, you might want to get something off of: a-great-list-of-top-books-to-read and use it for all of those shelves.

If you haven't picked your picturebook yet, please allow me to recommend The Sneetches and Other Stories. It's a great little book and you'll knock off almost all of the children's labels. Also, I got the "poetry" and "politics" shelves from it!

If you're in the mood for a sappy romance, Nights in Rodanthe knocks off quite a few of the year shelves (2004, 2005, etc.)

Another one for knocking off the years is Bel Canto -- plus there were some other goodies like "music" and "in-my-library".

Bel Canto is one of my all time favorites. After reading it (and after buying up tons of copies to give to friends) I read every other book by Ann Patchett. I loved them all, each one is so different. Some folks didn't love her memoir, "Truth and Beauty" about her friendship with Lucy Grealy, but I loved that one also.

A few books that knocked my socks off very recently:
The Speed of Dark by Elizabeth Moon
The Help by Kathryn Stockett (if you like audio books, this one is exceptional on audio)
Peace Like a River by Leif Enger

I'm listening to The Help right now! SO GOOD so far!

Judy, I also loved The Speed of Dark and The Help. I listened to both as audiobooks last year. Fantastic.

The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me by Roald Dahl gives you indonesian and unfiled - all in 75-ish pages.
