Ashley (booksinsideout) | 3 comments I often have trouble coming up with names for characters. In my opion, character names are very important, I consider if the name fits their personality and the meaning of the name is also important. Currently, I am working on this writing project that relates to the Ray Bradbury novel Fahrenheit 451. If you have read the novel, I would appreciate your help! I need to come up with a first name for Captain Beatty and Clarisse's Uncle.

Esther (essie7198) yea im like that too... i use this website that tells me what the name means... even though i usually don't say what it means in the story...

I do that all the time. Like Sybil means prophecy and I was writing a book about this girl who is the prophecy of the new evolution and so, I thought the name Sibyl was cool and unique and it turned out to fit her so well.

Michelle (missmeesh) I do the same...names with meaning. It makes the character more uniqe that way. I also tend to really know the character before I sit down to write - even if they suprise me later. My favorite site for finding names and surnames is http://www.behindthename.com/ and http://surnames.behindthename.com/ .

I also tend to do research on the names. Writing a novel in England in the 1500's? Then look at what names were and were not popular in that time. Canada in 1994? Then look at what names were populare then. It works really well and will pull your story together better.

Ashley (booksinsideout) | 3 comments this is what i always do, i think, okay, what are some words to describe that characters personality? then i'll usually look up name meanings with those adjectives. although negative meanings, like for villians are a little harder...
